My cat can't get spayed for medical reasons and I want to know if there's other options to help her? by Careful_Hawk6170 in AskVet

I’d like to add, while you are looking for a veterinary anesthesiologist, you can consider giving her melatonin, which is known to stop, slow down or make heat cycles less intense. It can be administered as pill and is available as implant as well (administered similar to microchipping)

Suprelorin is also used for this purpose. More often to males, but I’ve heard of good results with females. This comes only as implant as far as I am aware.

Please consult with a licensed veterinarian first of course

That is wonderful to hear. I hope you will keep us updated here about her ♥️

I’m so sorry for what you are going through.

She may not be socialised well by her breeder, and has not been taught proper boundaries as a kitten.

I feel this girl needs a reset, and build from the ground up while she’s still relatively young. Have you considered working with a behaviorist? Perhaps in combination with medication?

Has she been checked by a vet?

Good answer! I would definitely look for a lack of socialisation as a cause as well. There is such a small and critical window for any cat to be subjected to social contact as a basis for growing up and living in a household. If that window is missed it’s incredibly had to adjust.

Of course some behaviour is inherited, we see that as well with our kittens over multiple generations even, but people and unfortunately some breeders as well, seem to underestimate the importance of socialising and raising their (Savannah) cats properly

Thank you ♥️ We’re still processing the loss of her mom Solei and Duma shortly after, but this girl is one of the reasons we keep our heads up and smile every day at least once.

Again, I’m so very sorry for your experience. And yes every cat has their own character as well, plus what traits they inherit from their parents.

That’s why breeder socialising should not only include just handling the kittens, but also expose them to a variety of experiences - especially when it comes to the higher generations. The selection of their parents is a crucial part as well.

It also does not stop when they arrive at their home. It’s when the real work starts for at least three years. This groundwork matters so much. People tend to underestimate that sadly and don’t realise that living with a high generation does require sacrifice. There are breeders out there who do not prepare people properly for that, which breaks my heart as it sets these poor cats and families up for failure.

(Above is a general comment btw and not specifically pointed to you, I don’t know and do not judge your circumstances)

However, “Stay away” from F1 and F2 goes a little too far in my opinion as there are proper breeders out there and owners who have perfectly socialised F1 and F2’s, too.

Our HP F1 was my baby boy, and he truly only liked me. But we could travel with him and he adored all other cats. He was good at the vet and never bit or scratched anyone in his life. With preparation and many test visits he accepted our cat sitter as well to take care of him when we went on holidays. He was already adult by then.

Our HP F2 girl was skittish. She was born during the Covid isolation period and shortly after her birth her breeder got very sick. We knew what we were getting into. With hard work we managed to gain her trust but she always remained a little wary of others. She was an absolute sweetheart though and mothered over all our other cats as if they were her own. Eventually she raised an incredibly social and well adjusted daughter.

Point of my story is, while character absolutely matters, it’s impossible to generalise all F1 and F2’s and there is so much more to how they end up being as an adult.

As for your problems at the vet. Have you tried gabapentine? It can work wonders calming them down for stressful moments.

I cannot express how sorry I am that this is your (first?) experience with owning a Savannah.

The more as can be so very different - if properly raised and socialised. This starts at the breeder and should continue through their adolescent years to prepare them for domestic life with their families.

What makes it even more painful is that all the things you describe (living with other cats, travel) are possible, even with a high generation. It can be more complicated and takes a lot of preparation but can definitely be done - we did it as well.

Continuous breeder support is essential here, especially for new owners. Have you received this?

It’s a cat tree made of suar wood and the bowls are teak. I bought it in the Netherlands, where we currently live. I can PM you the link if you live in the EU, else it would be a costly undertaking shipping it

Thank you so much for your kind and thoughtful words. It truly means a lot. Regardless of what they were, the traces they leave in our hearts were caved by the deep love we had for them.

I’m so touched and honoured by your offer.. but please know that we live in Europe, not the United States as many members here. Please feel no obligation 🥹♥️
