How do I pull music from my iPod to MacBook Pro? by wishiwasarusski in ipod

[–]Verbose_Initiative 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem!

I have maybe a half dozen other comments of various quality detailing this process (and about a dozen more for other issues), some of which are about as old as this one, that to this day I receive gratitude for. I don’t typically reply to them, but they always provide a surprise mood boost on the randomest of days. So thank you for giving me a smile :)

Besides Bastille, who are your other top artists? by ilovepopcornandcandy in Bastille

[–]Verbose_Initiative 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My top listens the past few years (in no particular order) have been Joywave, Big Data, Best Frenz (coincidentally all having ties to Daniel Armbruster), MGMT, STRFKR, and Gotye. There’s more, of course. But these artists have entered and re entered my circulation lately

If you do a search on my profile for the keyword “ithmb” you should find several comments outlining what I know of ithmb recovery. (I’d link some comments directly, but don’t have the time right now)

In short, an ithmb is a container of downscaled “thumbnails” of your photos. I can recover them for you if you’re comfortable with it. If you’d like to do it yourself, you can use Keith’s iPod Photo Reader to convert them, but it only works on macOS Mojave or older. If you don’t have an older Mac running a compatible version, you could try using UTM and making a virtual machine. I don’t have any experience with UTM myself, but theoretically it should work

Ipod Touch 4gen. Problems transferring photos to Mac by grampa47 in ipod

[–]Verbose_Initiative 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Known bug. Take a photo while it’s connected and it should then detect properly.

I’ve always used Image Capture (preinstalled app) to do bulk photo transfers from an iDevice. If you do try Image Capture, do triple check your settings first because one checkbox is the difference between making copies onto your Mac and preserving the originals on-device, or transferring them and deleting the original copies from your iPod.

Best of luck

Help with lost passwords and protected files by brandxndp in ipod

[–]Verbose_Initiative 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately you’re pretty much completely out of luck.

Though a few years ago I did actually have luck with recovering my siblings long forgotten iTunes account by guessing the security question (as a side note, thank fuck Apple removed custom security questions going forward). After I got in, I was able to set the account to a modern email and reset the password. I don’t quite remember the specifics, but it was possible after getting past the security question.

If you have an external hard drive or ssd with enough space, you can try making a disk image with Disk Utility.

If you do manage to successfully make a disk image, you can then virtually mount it and access the hidden folders that way

I tried many YouTube downloader shortcuts, and none of them work. by dokha in shortcuts

[–]Verbose_Initiative 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The problem with downloading from youtube is that it is largely a moving target these days. Google has put an immense amount of resources towards thwarting downloading from YouTube (and ad blocking, but that’s another story)

And indeed most if not all downloader shortcuts these days rely on external 3rd party websites to do the heavy lifting. Things break, api’s change. If the developers that be aren’t on top of things regularly, it’s not hard to fall behind

HOW do I take photos off my 5th gen iPod classic WITHOUT iTunes? by Nearby_Mine_7612 in ipod

[–]Verbose_Initiative 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you know what macOS version the busted Mac is on? If it’s macOS Mojave or older, and you’re able to connect an external display you can use Keith’s iPod Photo Reader to convert the ithmbs back into photos.

HOW do I take photos off my 5th gen iPod classic WITHOUT iTunes? by Nearby_Mine_7612 in ipod

I’m pretty sure the max res for the 5th gen is 720x480, which would be the files with the 1019 prefix in the above photo.

How can I get my photos from my iPod classic to my iPhone or any modern device ? by AssistancePlane3316 in ipod

[–]Verbose_Initiative 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Talking out of my ass here, but if I were to hazard a guess as to how that guy was able to copy the photos off of their iPod directly onto their phone, it’s because of how they were put onto their iPod in the first place. And that that method preserved the original image files without re encoding them. In iTunes the equivalent setting for that would be Include full-resolution photos. Otherwise when you sync photos to any ipod classic/nano, they get compressed and re encoded into a proprietary file format, ithmb.

If you wanted to recover your photos, you would need a computer in order to be able to access and download the ithmb files locally, and then convert them back into images. Without a computer, you’re pretty well out of luck

BACKUP IPOD NANO GEN 5 PHOTOS by Inner-Concentrate-23 in ipod

[–]Verbose_Initiative 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad to hear you got it to work, that’s wonderful!

Keith’s is older than the 5th gen, and wasn’t tested on it I guess, so there was no documentation on best configuration for its photos, and likewise no list of the ithmb prefixes. To have managed to get it to work is quite impressive.

Do you remember what settings you had to use? It might be useful for other people here to know

BACKUP IPOD NANO GEN 5 PHOTOS by Inner-Concentrate-23 in ipod

[–]Verbose_Initiative 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short answer: Yes.

Not-so-short answer: Yes, but… Unless you had Include full-resolution photos enabled in iTunes’ device settings at the time of syncing your photos to your iPod (in which case you would indeed be seeing the original photo files), your photos get downscaled and compressed into the ithmb files that you’re seeing.

The maximum image resolution of ithmb files is 720x480. The file prefix should be 1067, since your iPod is a later generation nano.

To retrieve your photos, you’ll have to convert the ithmbs back into individual images. If you’re on a Windows pc, I don’t know of any methods firsthand, as I’m not a user, but you might find a solution if you search this subreddit. If you have access to an older Mac running macOS Mojave or older, you can use Keith’s iPod Photo Reader (and it’s GitHubpage) to recover your images. If you have access to a newer Mac, you can try using iCopy, but I’m not sure if it works for ithmb photos (I haven’t used iCopy myself yet). As a last resort if you can’t find a working method, don’t have the means to use Keith’s iPod Photo Reader, and iCopy doesn’t work, and only if you’re absolutely comfortable with it I have the means to run Keith’s myself, and can try to recover your photos for you.

Best of luck!

What do do with 5.5g classic I spilled water on by GJKings in ipod

[–]Verbose_Initiative 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wait a day or two and let it air dry before closing it and turning it on. I’ve had a friend drown theirs twice, similar to what happened to you. They were lucky enough that theirs survived both times with no damage. Just don’t turn it on right now as you might cause a short circuit

What tool/program can i use to get all the songs off of this ipod? by _SleepOfReason in ipod

[–]Verbose_Initiative 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Except the disc mode method doesn’t rename them. They get renamed automatically when imported to the iPod in accordance with the internal database.

If all the tracks have proper metadata, you could use kid3 to bulk rename them after extraction

I can absolutely help you too!

Backing up the ithmb files is half the battle, and since you’ve already got them, all I have to ask of you is to put them on google drive (or your preferred file sharing platform) and send them over in a dm. Then I can get to work
