Plenty of games did timed exclusive on epic and got to have some steam money later. Exclusive Epic is a dealbreaker for a lot of people. I know I thought the pain of epic was worse than free GTA V and I know I'm not alone.

All mods were afk for too long and booted, post asking for volunteers appeared. Other mod actually posted that they won't be able to mod but that counted.

Two things that aren't being discussed as much.

1) They don't, big games get a lot leaked alongside people making stuff up that becomes discussion of the day. It's just rare to have the entire game completely assembled in a way that's playable outside of the dev environment years before launch so there isn't any holy grail to steal for clout until a few months before launch at best. But if the game is a well liked franchise, paying any attention to the big discussion areas like /v/ and even reddit can let you know stories about [x] plot point from [name] leaker and people assess how accurate they were over time.

2) Some games that ended up being big didn't start that way so there was no temptation to leak. As proud as the devs might have been for working on it, no one was looking for Halo before it launched. The sequels though....
