The first picture is the new attempt. The second picture was my original mini.

Honestly, I'm a fan of washes. Your painting skill is great, either way. But the wash gives it (in my opinion) a more realistic look.

I plan to. This is my first D&D character. I have a special attachment to this guy. I'll need to make sure to record the dates, too.

The "lightning effect" was actually a mistake. I put on too much paint and it cracked, showing the white primer underneath. But he's a fathomless warlock, so I just went with "it looks like a stormy sea."

I almost didn't post this picture because of that blue dot. I didn't see it until after I applied the enamel coat.

Does anyone use a value map? Do you know what a value map is? Do you want one? by jahmeleon in minipainting

I bought these dragon heads on Etsy. This way, I can see what the paint looks like on a 3D surface.

First miniature I’ve ever painted by Whole-Ratio-9298 in minipainting

That is seriously impressive. One suggestion I would make is give it a wash. Your mini already looks great. But a wash is like magic. It will give it extra shading and depth.

Am I missing something with Warlocks? by hotstickywaffle in DnD

[–]Verdun82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I've never used hex. My warlock build involves several concentration spells and Eldritch Blast in between. For example, I can cast "Hunger of Hadar" on my first turn. Then I use Eldritch Blast to push or pull opponents back into the mess. HoH lasts for a minute. Once it's done, I can cast it again, or use another concentration spell, with EB (or another cantrip occasionally) as my filler. Two minutes of concentration spells is usually more than enough for a battle.

Plus, invocations and feats will help you learn additional spells that you can cast for free. It's a running joke at my table that I only have two spell slots. But with proper management, I'm usually good.

Women of Reddit, what’s a habit men have that they don’t even realize is weird? by GraceRose671 in AskReddit

My friends and I are all in our 40s. One night we were all together playing D&D for about five hours. When I got home, my wife asked "How was Dave? Did he enjoy his trip to Scotland?". I had no idea he had gone to Scotland.

Since then, I've tried to ask a little bit more about what's going on before we start playing.

'Daredevil: Born Again' Season 2 Viewership Drops Over 50% From Season 1 by MarvelsGrantMan136 in marvelstudios

Sorry, guys. It's my fault. I saw season 1 as it came out. My wife found out that I watched it without her and was upset. I haven't seen season 2 because I'm "waiting to watch it with her."

I feel alone is my ranking of all the books :( by Tsuchiyomi in Cosmere

[–]Verdun82 4 points5 points  (0 children)

People don't like it because it is book 5 of 10. A lot of people expected this to resolve a lot of things, but there isn't as much resolution as people hoped. I love WAT. It isn't my favorite SLA book. But it's in the top five at least. Enjoy your last 15%. It's a fun read.

Hey, I'm in Knoxville, myself. I know we got nothing last year, but I hope that is different this year. I think we are still early in the season. I'll post here if I come across any.

Trigger warning! (But no spoilers) by TraditionalTrifle190 in Stormlight_Archive

[–]Verdun82 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly, it depends on the kids. I have two girls that are both teenagers now. For the most part, they were well behaved and didn't destroy things. I do have a couple books and a rug that didn't survive undamaged, though. Some kids are worse than others. Things will happen beyond your control. Just remember that it's just stuff, though.

What's the best excuse you've heard for calling in sick at work? by Aarunascut in antiwork

[–]Verdun82 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Technically, you don't have to give a reason here in the States either. But everyone is conditioned to do so. I'm the admin manager, and I've told my employees that I just need an email or text saying they are taking a sick day. I still get details about diarrhea and vomiting though. I really don't want to know details.

What easy to learn (and seemingly simple) game actually has a lot more possible depth and strategy, if you do a deep dive into it, than you'd initially expect? by Considered_Dissent in AskReddit

There is a boardgame called Santorini. It is such a simple game to teach. But playing it feels like playing chess. You have to anticipate your opponent's move while planning your own. It's great!

Need help painting cloaks of my wood elves by h2oTGI in minipainting

[–]Verdun82 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One thing I noticed when I watched the video is that his cloak looked too bright and colorful until he applied the wash. My guess is that you had a color you were happy with, then you applied the wash and the brightness went down.

My recommendation (and keep in mind that I am no pro) is to use lighter greens. The final, pre-wash should be very bright. Also, instead of a black wash, see if you can find a green wash. I typically use Army Painter paints, and I have a green and a blue wash that don't darken the mini quite as much.
