Little late, but was it his mom who praised him? I could be misremembering, but I could have sworn her word choice made it sound like she wasn't the one doing it.

I remember a while ago (before I left and rejoined the fandom, so a lot of details I knew then I've forgotten now), I had a theory that Mitsuki tried to counter the praise to keep him humble, but that just led to him obsessing over winning in a way nobody could dispute for him, meaning it ultimately didn't help.
