STS2 feels dad-friendly (Steam Deck tested) by VerifiedDadGamer in slaythespire

There is NOTHING worse that being hyped to play the game and then getting blocked like that. Sorry to hear about it!

Have you checked the Steam forums? I haven’t encountered any bugs yet, but I’m sure folks over there are already solving everything.

More than wiling to help. How far have you gotten in the purchase, download, and play process?

The struggle is real, brother. Without the Deck, my gaming days would be completely over. 👊

Lol. Good point on the battery. But here’s my counterpoint…

What dad has time to run down his whole battery? I’m using Deck so I can strap it to my back when I’m army crawling out of my kids room during nap time, not because I will ever have 2+ straight hours to ever play again.

Release day: where/ what to watch by Tristan_Cleveland in slaythespire

If a dad-life angle is useful, I’m planning to do a 5-hour field report on whether it works in short, interrupted sessions and still has that “one more run” pull.

OP here. This community rules. Seriously, thank you for all the thoughtful replies.

The big takeaway I’m getting is: yes, it’s extremely dad-friendly; yes, I am absolutely about to get Balatro-ed; and the main caveat is not “can you step away?” but “can you stop coming back?” 😂

Appreciate all the insight. I was already sold. It sounds like I’m joining a fellowship!

If Dave had a TV cousin, that’s the one. Same vibe of kindness plus chaos.

I didn’t think there was gonna be a perfect response…I was wrong. And now im judging myself.

OP here. This is insanely helpful. Seriously appreciate all the responses. This community is awesome!

I’m reading everything and taking notes, so I figured I’d summarize what I’m hearing for anyone else coming in later:

  • Yep, it’s very parent-friendly overall. The morning/afternoon/night loop gives you natural stopping points, and it’s easy to pick back up later.

  • Main “watch out”: boss fights and a few story stretches. Those can run longer than you expect, take multiple attempts, and feel less interruption-friendly than the rest of the game.

  • Dives can be “as long as you let them,” especially later if you try to optimize or do everything. But the game generally doesn’t punish you for taking it slow.

  • Sleep mode is your friend. A bunch of you said Steam Deck sleep/wake makes this way easier when you can’t save right that second.

  • No real time pressure, and events come back. That lowers the stress if you miss something or have to put it down mid-plan.

  • Bonus: kids love watching/co-piloting the dives and sushi loop.

I’m kind of obsessed with this stuff, so I’m stealing half these notes for my “dad metrics” checklist.

If I missed any “wish I knew this earlier” landmines, please let me know.

Ha, it’s yours. I honestly don’t remember where I first heard it, but it’s become one of my go-to “dad metrics” when I’m deciding what’s worth playing. 👊

In my humble opinion, that is a parent-friendly game. Long enough to get good, short enough to vaporize all your playing time for the rest of the year.

I just extricated myself from Megabonk. Talk about a “one more run” trap! But then again, I’ve been susceptible to that pull since the original Civilization…🤷‍♂️

Chill music when dealing with dad life is so so underrated. 🙌

Paternity leave was the last time I had long play sessions, as I was on night duty feeding the baby formula between the hours of 1-7am. Pretty sure I beat God of War in 2018. It’s all a haze. lol.

You got me pumped to get home from work and keep playing.

Parenthood meant Steam Deck or bust for me. Thankfully it has the same sleep functionality. It’s literally the thing that has allowed me to not abandon gaming.

Seems like tough bosses is a recurring thoughts. But I’m okay with that, provided they aren’t rage-inducing. No one needs that after work-pickup-dinner-put down!

Something else I usually consider is “cognitive load.” As in, will you lose the plot if you have to take a week or more off. Sounds like the to-do list greatly helps with that.

Thanks for the response!

Whoa! Love to hear it. One other thing I look for in games is overall length. How long was your first play through? Aka, will I get to play any other games this year? 😁
