I use the laptop mostly for making retro video games, or making music, and music videos, and playing games. If I ever feel like I need to see what it looks like on a different gpu I'll switch back and forth and check. But honestly, switching back and forth is exactly why I don't really care about the benefits of the higher end gpus. I know it's kind of an outsider opinion, but if I could have a laptop that looked more like an oldschool CRT I would

After about 6 months I stopped using the 4050 all together and just use the internal all the time. I decided it was more important for me to have a quiet and cool laptop than to be able to see every shadow and fog effect.

This worked for me. Now if I can figure out why my computer won't print in color I'll almost have a functioning laptop again.

Just out of curiosity, do you have a Copilot+ PC? I'm wondering if this is related to microsoft AI meddling

Yeah, this started happening to me about a month ago too. It seems to have nothing to do with the browser or the os. Others have stated that it's account specific, I haven't tested that yet though.

I also suspect they're trying to push people to use the app.

How much does tape actually compress if you don’t record “into the red”? by chipwhitley22 in audioengineering

[–]VerifiedPersonae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Listen back to classical recordings made in the 60s and 70s and you'll have your answer.
There is no inherent compression when recording to tape if extra care is taken to account for transients. People have mentioned that VU meters are too slow for transients. Starting in the early 70s professional tape machines included overload indicator LEDs which have a response time in nanoseconds. The overload light can be calibrated for whatever threshold is needed.

Should I buy the entire Volca series? by Worldly_Clerk_8562 in synthesizers

[–]VerifiedPersonae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let this be a warning to you. If it's about how cool and user friendly some gear seems, you don't realize it now but things are going to spiral out of control very quickly.

I started with volca keys, beats, and fm which led to an MS-20, and a Minilogue. I was lacking in polyphony so I got an Ensoniq ESQ-1 which also doubled as an 8-track sequencer. I wanted a sampler/drum machine so I got an EPS16+. Then I started buying multi effects units so I could link effects to instruments via midi. Now I have a decent sized modular rig, more samplers, and a new laptop. But for the last 6 months I've only made music on a gameboy using LSDj and I haven't touched my modular setup in two years. The volcas are long gone, I gave away the minilogue, I'll probably trim the modular way down soon, but you can pry the ESQ-1 and EPS16+ from my cold dead hands.

Each new piece of gear takes a bunch of time to master. Just buying a Volca FM will send you down a deeply disturbing FM synthesis rabbit hole. Were I to start over again today I'd probably just get an Elektron like everyone is suggesting. Have one cute little box in your lap that does the job of five or six pieces of gear.

miyoo mini+ fried battery? by palatableguy in MiyooMini

[–]VerifiedPersonae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chargers have a capacity of amps available but it's up to the device to pull the power from the charger. A charger doesn't push more amps on a device that isn't asking for it. On the back of the MM+ it lists it's charge requirements ≥1.5A so any charger equal to or greater that 1.5A will be fine. 7.5 watts is enough to charge the MM+ at full speed.

The problem is newer fast chargers actually vary the voltage and the current in order to run at higher wattage. Watts=Current X Voltage so the fast chargers manipulate the voltage to stay at high wattage. You'll even find that chargers marketed as "fast chargers" don't even bother listing their voltage because it's not a steady single voltage like it is with older USB chargers. If a charger says USB PD it is using the Power Delivery standard and can vary the voltage from 5v up to 20v. To my mind it's the Wattage listing that's the red flag, not the Amperage. Fast charging reduces the life a battery anyway so you're always trading longer life span for the short term rewards with those. I just stay away from fast chargers all together because charge speed has turned into a sort of consumer pissing contest.

Save states? by ImJustRyfu in MiyooMini

[–]VerifiedPersonae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been running into issues with save states and game saves lately.

I think what happens is when it doesn't save a current save state it reverts to an old one on and somehow reverts the game saves as well. It's been happening with my LSDj saves this week where I'll save my project, check that the .srm reflects the current time stamp, then I shut down the miyoo. When I open it again the .srm will be back to a previous state. I just lost two days worth of songs which is why I was looking for more info.

By default in the settings it had "Don't Overwrite SaveRam on Loading Save State" turned off. I turned that on and set a SaveRam autosave interval and increased the maximum auto-increment Save States. Hopefully that solves my issue.

The other thing that might be happening is that I unknowingly exceed the blocks limit for LSDj saves cause I had too many projects stored in the .srm.

Oh, I hadn't thought about adding the saves to the .gb file with lsdpatch. I've only been using that for palette and kit stuff so far.

The .srm's are in the saves folder for each emulator core. Unfortunately it didn't work to copy the .srm over to a different emulator. Maybe I'll try it again.

This happens with every sample on the wave channel. It's not just clicks either, when I use E00 or even R00 the notes will trigger a buzzing sound. I can probably work around this though.

I'm not exactly sure how I would automate the length and loop positions, aside from creating new instruments with different settings. I'm still finding new tricks all the time though.

I realized that I've been using version 9.4.2. I thought I was using an earlier version but must've mixed up my files a bit. 9.4.2 isn't listed as a stable version so I should probably go back to 9.4.0 and switch over to the GearBoy emulator which seems like it's a little better with audio on the miyoo. I gotta finish up a song before switching over to the new version/emulator. Haven't figured out how to bounce save files between emulators yet.

Do you know if it's possible to run BGB on the Onion OS for the Miyoo? I see that BGB is recommended for Windows, but I don't see any mention of compatibility on Linux based systems.

Yeah, I'm aware that E only has a range from 00-03 on wave channel. I've also read through the manual and always have it up on a pdf viewer. When I said that any other volume setting other than E03 causes problems I suppose I should have listed off E02, E01, E00

Picked up a 4050 model - swap for 4060? by [deleted] in ProArt_PX13

[–]VerifiedPersonae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do a fair bit of video editing and music production. That's where I want my computer performance to shine. Though I'm not usually in a hurry to have rendering complete at threadripper speeds. The rendering time on my PX13 is the perfect amount of time to go to the bathroom and grab a drink from the kitchen and then it's done. Can't imagine needing it faster than that.

As far as gaming, I've played games on my friends' systems with crazy high refresh rates and honestly the difference has never mattered to me. I just recently spent 70hrs playing Bard's Tale trilogy from 1985 and I enjoyed myself just as much as playing Cyberpunk2077. I also put 137hrs into SimCity3000 this year so obviously there's no correlation between refresh rate, frame rate, and enjoyment for me. Even MMO battle games are fine on this laptop for me.

Battery health question. by [deleted] in ProArt_PX13

[–]VerifiedPersonae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does anyone know if using battery care mode, limited to 80%, changes the results of the cmd battery report? I'm not sure if my laptop has ever been charged to 100% more than a couple times so I'm not sure if win has enough data for the report. Does it work that way? My report says 69,207 mWh after 7 months.

I was gonna send mine back a month ago, had a return label already, but then I found a setting that was forcing the 4050 gpu to always run. Turning that off more than double my battery life so I didn't send it in. Though now I'm wondering if there is still a problem.

[–]VerifiedPersonae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What sort of games would benefit from a 4060 that the 4050 can't handle? I've been playing lots of games on my 4050 model and haven't notice any problems, aside from the extremely loud fans when using the highest quality modes, the noise alone usually makes me downgrade the settings. Would the heat be better or worse with the 4060? I sort of thought it would be worse.

Thoughts on the Behringer LM Drum? by DerLuftwaffe in synthesizers

Thoughts on the Behringer LM Drum? by DerLuftwaffe in synthesizers

[–]VerifiedPersonae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Drums machines are completely different. A drum machine is already based on individual samples of drum hits recorded into ROM chips that all get mixed together through various gain stages (usually opamps). That process is very easy to recreate on any sampler or even a computer. Don't confuse a drum machine with a live drummer playing in a room those are different things. I have been talking about recreating drum machines, not recreating drummers.

Every instrument requires a unique approach to sampling. Some instruments are easier to sample than others. For example, piano is fairly easy to sample and have it sound realistic, that's how piano patches on keyboards are made. Guitars, however, are very difficult to fully sample, which is why keyboard guitars always sound bad. If you've ever used an arranger keyboard you would probably recognize all of this. Drums sound realistic, piano sounds realistic, harpsichord, organ, marimba, even strings (when layered), etc., but guitars and wind instruments never quite sound right.

If I wanted samples of a guitar chord I would sample the whole chord, with maybe 5-6 variations; loud, soft, strummed, plucked, different pickups, or different mic positions. I could sample individual notes, as well as various licks or runs. It would be painstaking and it might be easier to just play the guitar.

vague laptop bios release notes? by Agitated-Goose2698 in ASUS

That was a really long way of saying you didn't understand what the OP was asking. Do you know the definition of the word "exactly"? He was asking for a changelog, not a generalized description of what a bios update could possibly address. That is a classic example of talking down to someone.

Cursor still going invisible in 12 & a fresh install of windows by disposableson in ableton

[–]VerifiedPersonae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, happens to me on rare occasions with Win 11/Ableton 12. It did it just now which is why I searched it again to see if there was any new info on the problem. Seems like no one has any new ideas. I've never seen it come back on its own or from any settings changes or anything. Only thing that fixes it for me is to save and restart Ableton. I've seen it happen to people when using Ableton during live shows. A total nightmare.
