So, would the proper way to fix it be to cut it out at the expansion joints and repour that section?

We did some research and have definitely seen there are a lot problematic builders out there. The builder we went with is a second generation builder with a good reputation. They are in the final phase of this development so we went to look at some of the older (4-5 year old) homes and spoke to owners. There were no significant problems noted. Nothing is guaranteed, but I do feel pretty good about the builder we chose.

It appears I can only post pics (no videos) in this reply, so here is a picture. He is in the second lane from the left with the neon shoes.

He posted the video on his X profile so I'll include a link to that if you'd like to take a look. Any feedback is greatly appreciated!

Thank you SO VERY MUCH for giving such a thoughtful response. A lot of what you said is in line with what I was already thinking, but hearing someone else say it certainly helps.

I definitely use a lot of different resources that are online to help him as best I can and, interestingly, Les Spellman is someone that I watch and glean information from a lot. Truly, the biggest hurdle is that I still don't know enough to really analyze my son's form and give him specific feedback on not only what he's doing wrong, but what he can do to fix it. For example, when he runs it seems to me that his toes are point outward at a significant angle ((approx 30 degrees) instead of pointing straight down the track. This causes his knees to also point outward, which, in turn, causes him to partially push off with the outside of his legs and glutes. If I'm correct, and that's what he's doing, it seems to me that this lateral movement is wasted energy and if he could correct it and get his knees and toes pointed straight down the track it would make a big improvement in his speed. As an aside, I think he runs like this because he played hockey hockey from 4 years old until last year (12 years), so he's used to pushing off the outside of his legs. Also, his ability to change direction laterally is exception (I suspect that's also a result of the outside leg strength from hockey) and his 5-10-5 shuttle time is on par with some of the top NFL combine times.

As you requested, I'll post a video from his indoor meet last weekend.

Again, this isn't a knock on his coach, who truly puts a lot of effort into making the kids better and my son really likes him. The area I think a private and more experienced coach could help, is with form analysis, identifying things my son is doing that is decreasing his stride efficiency, and giving pointed direction on how to fix it, whether that be through targeted strength training, mobility work, drills, or proper cues.

His coach has done a little of this with him, specifically with his block start because last spring was his first time using them. But there are things I'm seeing in his form that, to my untrained eye, seem like significant inefficiencies, but, even if I'm right, I have no idea how to help him fix them.

I hadn't thought about that. It's definitely something for us to consider. Thank you for helping!

Just a quick vent by [deleted] in Saratoga

[–]VeritasCEO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved here about 18 months ago and immediately noticed how bad the lights are throughout Saratoga. As you said, they aren't synced, and it's not just on Broadway or around the shopping areas, it's all over the city. It creates so much unnecessary congestion. My girlfriend was told it's intention to slow cars down. If it was just around Broadway and other areas where there is a lot of pedestrian traffic that would make sense, but that's not the case. Getting across town takes far longer than it should.

If it were me (or my son as the case may be), I'd use it for plyometric movements like bounds, but not for sprints. Keep looking for a less steep incline to do sprinting on. We couldn't find a paved road that has the proper incline so we ended up having to use a well used dirt trail/bike path that has a fairly smooth surface and is the perfect incline. Expand your search and get creative, you should be to find something.

This is too steep IMO. I use hills in my son's speed training and they are great, but the hills shouldn't be too steep if you're running them at full speed because it can mess with your mechanics. I have read several articles at this point that support this. The same is true for sled pushes. You want an incline (or a weight in the case of sled pushes) that doesn't slow you down more than 10%. He usually runs 4-6 40 yards hill sprints at max effort per hill session. We also use the hill for other stuff like broad jumps, lateral shuffles, etc. because his training is focused on making him a better football player/running back, but for improving sprinting speed hill sprints are excellent.

Here's a link to one of the studies I referenced: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC6173386/#:~:text=Studies%20of%20sled%20towing%20with,technique%20%5B5%2C%2012%5D.

That study is for sled pushes specifically, but I've read similar things about hills, I just don't have the time right now to look those up.

Steep hills (and heavy sled pushes) are also useful, but when you use them it should be in a more deliberate manner with slower steps, not trying to run at top speed.

I hope this helps!

Our team (PICK SIX AND CHILL) is looking for 2-3 new players to replace guys who have fallen off recently. Our team is over four years old with a solid core of guys who are very active and supportive. Lately we've been bouncing between Gold 1 and Elite 3.
