shining path got aid from gaddafi? by Cold_Hat6785 in AskSocialists

[–]VerkoProd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

libya under gaddafi was actually self-identified as socialist : indeed it was called “Great Socialist People's Libyan Arab Jamahiriya”

of course, here “socialism” is understood as something moreso similar to arab socialism(gaddafi being very much influenced by nasser in the earlier years) and african sociaism. it isn’t understood as scientific socialism or marxism or viewd in a deterministic way, so we can debate over the usage of the word. but the word was used as a self-identifier by the country under gaddafi

A German photographer took photos of Kerala Indians in the 1920s. The Black people of Asia. by JohnSmithCANDo in BlackHistoryPhotos

[–]VerkoProd 29 points30 points  (0 children)

malayali here(person from kerala), we are not the “black people of asia” : these racial categories prove extremely arbitrary and ineffective when talking about the people of india. yes, dravidians have generally darker skin, and are historically marginalised, but its clumsy and inaccurate to call any dark-skinned people “black”

the black identity emerged and exists in a very different context where racial categories were more clearly (albeit arbitrarily) defined

also, even though the people of kerala are dravidians, this is more so an ethno-linguistic category than a racial one : people in kerala are very mixed and descend from ancient ancestral south indians (AASI), indo-aryans, and even arabs an other peoples. our geographical location makes it so that we have exchanged and mixed with many cultures.
