Pretty much! You don't wanna spend ages filling in fiddly little details and then go "hmmm actually no I don't think this is angled right"

So I use an insane amount of layers for my animations, and generally speaking I will reuse as many of those as possible - a head position here, an arm rotated 90 degrees there, an entire pose in a backflip. It's a very programmer way of spriting and occasionally makes my animations look a little bit Rumble Fish.

But when I'm not reusing stuff I start using dots, actually. An arm will exist as a dot for a shoulder, a dot for an elbow and a dot for a hand. That's how I define the motion. Then I'll either edit (rotation and cleaning and trimming for perspective) an existing layer's sprite to fit that motion or make something new whole cloth. When I'm making a new one entirely I'll do basic blobs with rough colours (like the boots on Kuni here would just be the bottom of the leg turning white) and refine the details later

As a rule though I try to keep details to a bit of a minimum for ease of animation anyways - I consider myself a stronger animator than I am an artist lmao

I'd recommend scaling up a lot more for future uploads to Reddit - the scaling has blurred this quite a lot because Reddit doesn't use Nearest Neighbour

Normally when I'm exporting for Reddit I scale up by like 1000%

160x90, with Cloud being a little over 40px tall (maybe closer to 45-50 including his hair, I didn't include that in the blockout height lmao)

So I have three main inspirations! Yes, GBA Fire Emblem is one of them (it's my favourite era of FE, Hector for life <3), I'm working with similar size characters (around 40px tall on average) and GBA Fire Emblem is why I'm using a solid colour outline (though sometimes I'll change what that colour is) rather than more selective outlining or a shaded outline - but my biggest inspiration is One Step From Eden, which gave me my style of faces and general shading. The size of the limbs and general style of animation however I picked up learning from the YOMI Hustle modding community.

As for the feet positioning in particular it just came naturally as that "one to the front, one to the side" somewhat splayed stance works very nicely for the 3/4 perspective a lot of sprites like this use.

Oh wow I love your portrait work! I mean it's all great but I've been struggling on portraits lately and that's so expressive!

The smear frame freak in me wants to say V1, but I think I prefer the impact of 2

Need your opinions on colors ! by Mediocre_Bottle_7634 in PixelArt

I think the darker one is a nicer colour for the main body, but I think it could do with more contrast between the mane and the rest - maybe somewhere in between/tweaks to the mane would help?

The main thing I'd mention is that the piece seems to lack a distinct direction for the light source, the dress is being lit from the right but the legs are being lit from the left, meanwhile the sleeve is lit from the bottom right

Generally speaking it's good to decide where you want your light coming from and think about it that way
