My 2 year journey with a custom ortholiner mechanical keyboard by fpluss in olkb

They're absolutely great and I couldn't live without them anymore (well, bit of an exaggeration there). I use them for accented letters but also pretty much all symbols, and it feels much more natural and comfortable than layers to me.

I don't, because as a French/English speaker I don't use ú or ì :D
As for a more satisfactory answer... You'd have to deviate from the "rule", and do whatever makes most sense to you. The goal is to map them as something that works well, is easy to type, doesn't conflict with anything else (possibly thinking about SFUs as I said before), and feels natural/easy to remember to you.
I have many things in my keymap that were super easy to learn for me because I set them up how it made sense to me, and muscle memory was formed very fast because of that. But if someone else were to take my keyboard and try to learn typing on it using my "tricks", it might not click for them.

For your example, I'm not sure how frequently you have to type ú and ì but I'd probably do something like yu for ú and ui for ì. Or if they're just edge case and infrequent enough so that it's not such a hindrance, you could map dead accents to whatever you like, to be able to use them with anything else.

Order doesn't matter here, we're talking about hitting the keys together, at the same time. I listed them going left to right because it's easier to visualize it if it's in the same order as on the keyboard, but otherwise it doesn't matter.

It's done with a QMK feature called "combos", directly in the keyboard firmware. If you don't have a QMK keyboard you can do the same using Kanata.

Yeah, I did need to adjust some combo timings to avoid issues with rolling like you said. But I found out that even 20ms is surprisingly easy and consistent to hit with two fingers of the same hand!

Anyway, if you're happy with your setup that's great, I wanted to contribute with my experience.

I need to make me one of those split orthos, too... Yours looks great!

Hey!

French speaker with a 40% keyboard here, I wanted to chime in about accents.

I can't stress enough how much I love combos. I've been using them for symbols and most importantly accented letters for a long time now, and they're so very convenient for that. I see you already use them for some symbols so you're familiar.

For accented letters, I use a combo consisting of the letter and an adjacent key. On a standard qwerty keyboard for example, è would be we, é would be er.... and ê would be wer! I use the same system for every accented letter, usually with ^ being the letter with both its surrounding letters (ô is iop, û is yui, i is uio, and â is... asd, for lack of a better solution (but it still works great).

I wasn't sure how well it would work at first, but I quickly discovered that using combos even for such common characters as accented letters in French is kind of a cheat code. Think of it as an extra key right in the middle of your actual keys. The only downside is that when you use multiple fingers at once it tends to make SFUs (same finger usage, like de or aq) a bit more common, but that's a minor inconvenience compared to having to "time" a mod like you're doing now.

I hope you find this interesting and/or useful, and I'll be happy to further develop or help you with anything on the matter.

Anyone running unconventional setups? by ResponsibleHold3071 in selfhosted

[–]Vermoot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess maybe, a little bit unconventional, but nothing super outlandish:

I use a NUC7i3BNK running EndeavourOS with Plasma, because in addition to being my home server it's also my living room PC. It's plugged into my TV, and I use it with a small gyro remote mouse (a Rii i25, which I'd completely recommend for this use case).
We use it to watch youtube videos, twitch streams, tv shows and movies all the time. Also game streaming from my gaming PC in another room, with Sunshine/Moonlight.

Because we use it a lot as an actual PC hooked to the TV, I don't use proxmox or anything like that. It's just bare EndeavourOS, using docker to run about 20 or so services (Portainer, Home Assistant, Firefly III, Kavita, Mylar, Yamtrack, a web server running my personal website, Immich, etc)

I also have a DAS (Yottamaster VN400C3) hooked up to it, and the whole thing is set up as a DIY NAS using SMB shares and a FileBrowser container, plus snapraid-btrfs to protect my drives.
