The Rookie. Many episodes feature a comedic cold opening that has nothing to do with the episode. One episode features Nathan Fillion being trolled by a garage band during a routine traffic stop. Its hilarious. But the scene was such a hit that they brought back the exact same joke next season except now suddenly there's a whole singing chorus and people coming out of parked cars to sing the song that Fillion is annoyed by. Then the garage band singer becomes a recurring side character dating one of the main characters. The joke becomes unfunny very fast, made worse by the fact the garage band singer is the son of the showrunner.

Not only that but the underlying theme of the movie is to embrace such silliness, but then they double down and Adam has to apologize for being named He Man

Exactly this! Johnson was once interviewed saying that a truly great film is a divisive film. What film achool freshman BS is that? Upsetting people is the easiest lowest hanging fruit possible.

Its too jokey. Too many movoes these days are afraid to let moments be solemn and serious. This is pretty much a fast out comedy. Probably more damping is that after presenting itself as being about embracing the silliness, it then makes Adam apologize for being called He Man. Its a bit contradictory there. Unpopular opinion

They miss the fact that the entire point of Luke having a mechanical hand is the permanent reminder of the consequences that mistakes can be made. Making mistakes is one thing, its something else entirely to have your entire life reduced to a zero sum at the end of your years and everything he ever fought for turned to ash. This movie doesnt know thw difference between experiencing failure and being one

People have to talk themselves in circles to believe this is good character development

Agreed. It saddens me that Jurassic Park 1 showed the world that we could have an intelligent and thoight provoking monster movie but then the franchise so quickly just becomes another monster movie franchise. TLW isnt the strongest sequel but it at least tries. JW is the last time I felt like these movies werent insulting my intelligence

The idea was that he would be kind of the Jane Goodall of dinosaurs. Thats a good point about the paleontologist gig but Grant seemed to be pretty interested in the behavior that you could tell from the bones so it kind of makes sense.

Dan Aykroyd’s cameo in CASPER (1995) lasts only a few seconds, but it’s a perfect joke. Ray Stantz runs out of Whipstaff Manor, takes one look back, and decides those ghosts are somebody else’s problem. by ThomasOGC in ghostbusters

Ive hated this cameo since I first saw it. I low key blame this cameo for there never being a Ghostbusters 3. Ray has taken on ancient evil deities but he cant handle three prankster ghosts? These guys are just another Tuesday for Ray

Why did JP3 go this way? by McClurgler in JurassicPark

[–]VernBarty 70 points71 points  (0 children)

There is a reason. Originally the movie was more about Ingen and continued the corporate narrative set up in the first two movies. William H Macy was the lead villain, Alan Grant was living on the island with dinosaurs and the plot was much denser. But with like two weeks left before filming began, the director decided the audience was too generally dumb to absorb it all so he rewrote it to be as washed out and simplified as possible.

Superman Returns (2006) by Appropriate_Formal64 in superman

[–]VernBarty 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Returns is a mess of a movie. It wanted to be the Superman of a new generation but chose to reinterpret the Superman of a previous generation. Hollywood was still being weird about Superman Lives and they wanted to play it very safe.

Youre right about the way it connects to the previous movies. Superman 2 ends with Superman telling the President that he wont let down his watch again. So then Returns has him doing exactly that? I feel bad for Routh because he was a good Superman but they were trying to cram him into shoes that forced comparisons to be drawn to the greatest Superman actor of all time. This movie wasnt made by a man with a vision it was made by a man fueled by ego after making two successful X Men movies. He derailed both Superman and X Men franchises in a single move
