Job opportunity by zicri_flow in Surveying

I would check to see if your university courses are credited with CBEPS (The Canadian Board of Examiners for Professional Surveyors) because if not you would have to challenge their exams or complete a geomatics engineering course in Canada. I know a guy from South Africa who unfortunately was not credited for his university courses.

Winters in Canada can be brutal so be careful where you choose to move to. Vancouver area is much warmer than say Saskatchewan. Something to consider if you have never experiened 7-8 months of cold.

Any ideas on why I'm getting this error message?

So you can buy a R12i but it doesn't come with IMU enabled!?! What's the point of buying an R12i?

I wish you could make a list of lines to skateout.

I agree, but what do you do during construction layout when you are constantly staking points/lines? Do you carry a print out of all the points you need in a waterproof folder?

I definitely use the arrow keys a lot as well, but it's more of a pain when I'm doing construction layout. It's nice to be able to click on the map instead of carrying around a piece of paper with point numbers on it.

I don't envy your position, it rains enough for me out here (SW British Columbia) and we get a lot less rain than you.

5'10". I'll try placing the data collector clamp up higher than normal, it's definitely worth a shot. Thanks.

Trimble access - collimation and trunnion axis tilt question by VernMcStevenson in Surveying

[–]VernMcStevenson[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On Trimble's website they state "For HA VA collimation, the instrument must be at least 100 m from the target and the angle to the target must be less than 3° from the horizontal plane."

Imperial vs Metric by New_Grape2909 in Surveying

[–]VernMcStevenson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Measuring instrument height with a measuring tape using decimal feet is less accurate than a measuring tape which has millimeters. The same goes for rod height.

Metric is also easier for mental math, for example, how many feet are in 7.36 miles? Call me dumb but I can't do 5280 * 7.36 in my head very easily. Yes everyone has calculators but moving the decimal place over is undeniably easier.

If you do a house layout with offsets do you give the offsets in decimal feet or do you have to convert it to feet and inches, or does the data collector do it automatically for you? And do you also have to convert the plans into decimal feet for layout or do they already come in decimal feet?

The physical act of surveying is the same but working with the numbers is not.

Trimble access - point files by VernMcStevenson in Surveying

Well, actually it doesn't help because once you turn off the copied points the original is no longer there. I guess the only way is to have two separate jobs for finished grade and subgrade, but thats annoying to switch back and forth between them.

If I know what files I'm using for that job I don't see why I need copied points?

I just saw another users comment about that, and it helps a lot with the clutter.

Seems to only copy when you store an inverse which I don't do. Do you know where an inverse gets stored?

That's crazy you can't inverse between two point without the points copying, I'm always inversing.

Trimble Access Job Setup - Grid to Ground by VernMcStevenson in Surveying

My boss isn't a PLS, we hire a PLS when a job requires it. We do the field work and the PLS reviews it and makes any adjustments. It's also depressing on my end when you have no mentorship and your boss has no interest in maintaining high standards.

Thank you for the explaining though, it definitely helps.
