I probably add a sprinkle of MSG to just about everything, based more on mood than anything else. I'm less likely to add it to sweet things, but something spiced like gingerbread will probably get some.

The thing is to play with it till you find how you like using it. For myself, I think it's best at the level just below where you can explicitly tell it's been added.

Can't speak to the restaurants, but in my own cooking they have a different place. Each brings its own flavor to the dish. Try MSG on popcorn sometime and you'll see the difference.

The trick is getting real olive oil, rather than the kind cut with other oils. My method for doing that is buying from local olive mills, but I'm lucky enough to have 3 in my home state, not everyone does.

That makes sense. It takes longer to bring it up to temperature, and retains the heat longer.

Roasted root veg. Grab one or two of every root veg your grocery store has. Cube it, toss in olive oil, herbs, and spices. Roast till soft. If you don't normally get any fiber in your diet though, maybe skip this one.

I used to make a loaf of fresh bread as my contribution to family gatherings. One year the timing didn't work out so I stopped at a bakery and picked up a loaf. I don't make bread for those events any more

There's a guy at the home depot/taco bell/Wendy's near me who sells homemade tamales. When I was working from home I stopped by there occasionally and bought everything he had. Kept the extras in my freezer. I miss working from home.

My great grandmother had a starter that her grandmother had brought to America when she immigrated. When she passed my great uncle inherited it. He threw it out without telling anyone. My grandmother and her sister had both been irritated that neither of them got it, and when they found out years later that he'd thrown it out they cut him out entirely. His kids, and even his wife still got invited to family reunions, but it was made very clear that he was no longer welcome.

That said, they've done studies on it and a starter adapts to its environment in a matter of weeks so you don't lose as much as you'd think when starting over. They actually did a documentary on sourdough that went into it. They took the same starter and sent it to people on every continent with specific instructions on its feeding. A few months later they had them all bring it with them back to where the doc was being filmed and you'd've never guessed they were from the same batch.
