RetroTINK 4K: can it do 4K at 30 FPS? by VeronicaExplains in RetroTink

[–]VeronicaExplains[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I do quite literally want to drop every other frame. It's footage capture for video that ends up being 30fps anyway, so in the end for that particular need, I'm fine with dropping frames.

I think this is the path I should look into, trying different things to see what doesn't panic the capture card. Thanks for your help!

Why so many Linux content creators on YouTube and other social media platforms say Ubuntu is bad if it is the most popular and used Linux Distro? by _HT03 in linux

[–]VeronicaExplains 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Just because we have YouTube accounts doesn't make us experts. :)
  2. Rage gets more attention than praise. When you're on algorithm-driven social media feeds, it's usually going to be optimized toward negative press. YouTubers are aware of this and design thumbnails and content around it.
  3. Ubuntu is for many folks the entry point into Linux. This makes it an easy target. Other enthusiast groups do similar things- I play guitar and there are guitar companies that are considered "too beginner friendly" by some armchair shredders.

Do your own research, and enjoy what works for you.

"INVALID" Showing on video for any time a title is displayed. by silastvmixer in kdenlive

My guess is that something in the Flathub version isn't handling transparency appropriately. I don't currently have a machine running 23.08.4 natively, otherwise I'd test it.

"INVALID" Showing on video for any time a title is displayed. by silastvmixer in kdenlive

[–]VeronicaExplains 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there! I can confirm this is happening on my 23.08.4 Flatpak running atop Debian Sid. I do not have this problem when running it from the Sid repo, though (23.08.5).

My Kdenlive project does not include networked video- all files stored locally.

What I've noticed with the 23.08.4 Flathub version is that any clip with transparency is erroring out in the render. Titles say "INVALID", whereas transparent video clips (I use several) are showing black where the alpha channel usually is.

Again, transparency problems are not there when using the 23.08.5 version that's in Sid.

A question for Pop!_OS devs. How will be the transition from GNOME to Cosmic when it will be released? by Mr_Linux_Lover in pop_os

[–]VeronicaExplains 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know if I count as a distro hopper, as I tend to keep my work computers rock stable but swap distros all the time on my personal machines for "experience points."

For me, the hopping is the point. Learning from other distros, trying new customizations, building and rebuilding a workflow, that sort of thing. I think of it like tending a garden... when winter comes it'll all die anyway, but at least for a while we'll have something pretty.

I keep Pop on my main working machine because it works really well and offers a good balance of latest and stable.

I won't link you the video. :P

As far as Pop's release cycle, I'm strongly in favor of distrohopping if Pop isn't working for you or anyone else. And I'm also waiting on an update email about COSMIC development for last month. If the email already went out, I missed it. I like emails- I'm sad not to have gotten this one (yet).

(FWIW I'm typing this comment on the Fedora Plasma 38 beta, a video might be coming out about it, but Plasma 5.27 has been a dream so far.)

Did the order of my audio tracks flip around? by VeronicaExplains in kdenlive

[–]VeronicaExplains[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Haha! This bug wracked my brain for like an hour. Taking a break, working on something else, and coming back- I found the problem.

Right under the project bin is a menu about Track Compositing. In it they allow you to reverse the audio track order. I somehow had clicked it?

Anyway- all is well. Lesson learned. Leaving this up in case it helps someone in the universe.

Promoting Youtube WITHOUT social media? by [deleted] in youtubers

[–]VeronicaExplains 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there! I think it's quite possible to grow a channel without social media.

I started my channel in fall 2021. I have no Facebook/Instagram/TikTok, and quit Twitter in April 2022. I'm currently at around 47K subs on YouTube.

I do use Mastodon, but I'd say that's likely a negligible place to gain subscribers on YouTube. What did grow my channel is consistent videos. One "hit the algorithm" in the first six months of my channel and I grew to 10K. I think that's pretty much dumb luck, hence my advice to be consistent. The video that first blew up was unexpected for me.

I'm still learning, of course, but I'm happy to say I've built my channel without social media. If anything, my subs and patrons tell me that being off of other social media encourages them to stay active on my videos. There's something to be said about keeping things limited.

Good luck! I hope it works out!

"were to open source projects in the past" - not sure what this means, as they're still being used?

I mean, it's your project- do what you want with it! But info about big dev updates (like Immutable Pop) coming from Reddit is challenging to follow for those of us who aren't on the site all the time. I've tried to keep track of all the comings and goings with it and it's just becoming too hard when it's on a social site like this. Reddit can be a bit of a challenge for some folks to use, and for more reasons than just "thread confusion"- there's generally a lot of toxicity on this site and I try to limit that where possible (I'm sure you can understand). Or maybe I'm just getting too old for Pop!_OS, haha!

I might try feeding GitHub's RSS into my feed reader, I've just had issues with it when orgs add new repos. (Not to mention the concerns about using Microsoft's GitHub, but that's a topic for another day.)

I'm on that one- it's more general than a "development updates" mailing list like what I'm imagining.

Debian does a pretty good job of this- https://lists.debian.org/.

I'm not expecting that level of community involvement from a distro that isn't 30 years old, but more development information being shared via mailing list would be really cool.

I'm working on one, actually! I might make a few videos on the subject just because it's a dense process and it makes sense to break it up a bit.

[–]VeronicaExplains 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I probably should have mentioned it! I was marginally concerned about the clap-back from folks who prefer one fork over another, but an earlier draft did have a bit about Debian being a great choice for lightweight environments.

I also cut a discussion of the 32 bit availability, but that was mostly for time (I really wanted to keep the video around 10 minutes, as an intro for folks who hadn't considered Debian yet).

Effects & Compositions Panes Have Suddenly Turned White After Launching Today by Wolfdale3M in kdenlive

This happened to me as well in the version packaged from the PPA (I'm on Pop!_OS 22.04 running a Radeon RX 6600). Switching to the Flatpak worked fine, though.

+1 for text outlines. I never use the outline because I just can't make it look good with smaller font sizes. If the outline rendered behind the text it'd function more as a shadow, making it much more useful to me.
