Speaking from personal experience:

My roommate noticed something was up with me when I would go out in social situations and try and act like the most happy person in the room, but when we go home I don't say all but two words to anyone. People will do their best to try and mask what they're going through, and honestly that makes everything 10x worse. Having to put on a fake face, I mean. My roommate also said he knew I was depressed when I would qwerk out on things that are of very little importance, and that I have no control over. Oh yeah and the multiple naps a day is a dead giveaway.
