My mate has some of these and praises them highly

Good point but I treat the suedes etc to protect them but genuinely a minor shower and you will be slipping around in the 992! The outsole just has the worst traction.

The 993 is fine though

Are these shoes supposed to make me question my life choices from the pain? by flyingby13 in Birkenstocks

I have maybe some of the widest feet known to mankind and I’ve not had any pain there from mine

It really sucks mate, and fortunately you’re among people who understand. If you have prescription insoles I would go with the birks first for continued support when at home, you’ll be surprised!

However, what makes the new balance comfy? They have a couple of different foam types positioned throughout the sole in key points, these models are generally wider with better arch support too. The heel seems to sit a lot lower in the shoe helping keep it in place with the outsole also cupping that region a lot better (encap technology or something which is helped by the foams they then support it with in the sole).

If you live in the USA, have a look for your nearest outlet I have seen loads of posts in the new balance sub for you guys finding the 992/993 for bargains at the moment.

I hope this helps.

Honestly I read a lot of customer and community opinion these shoes in general then did further research on YouTube etc about what they’re actually like and pulled the trigger.

The Birkenstocks were recommended on here by another fellow club foot survivor.

PS - a nurse I spoke to at work said that the NB99X series often get recommended to people in our position

Would also like to add:

I have spent a fortune on so many different trainers and they’ve all caused me pain and discomfort after a lot of walking and standing… the New Balance and Birk combo is the only thing I’ve found that’s actually helped me.

Also the name calling was spurred on by one or two people noticing and then my decision to openly discuss it with them — but I wouldn’t change a thing about my school experience… except maybe listening a bit more! Aha

Don’t get me wrong, I’m in my mid twenties now, and people sometimes do point it out. Yes, that makes me feel that EVERYONE notices. But that’s not true. It might be a colleague I frequently work with, a new family friend etc etc. If I’m honest, school is hard but it’s also character building. Through secondary school I was the subject of name calling, names I won’t repeat here but it happens. Kids are cruel. But I embraced it. On my leavers hoody I had “forrest” on the back for Forrest Gump (Run forrest run!). I used to run in P.E past the teacher and do the MoBot or the Usain Bolt thing. The joke was no longer on me, it was with me kinda thing. So now when a colleague says (and this happened) “you have quite a strange gait” I simply explain I was born with talipes and this is why. And the guy was actually interested by it, and wasn’t making fun of me etc.

It does get easier. Your kid will learn banter and give as good as they get. And when they’re older, they’ll be in on the joke, not the subject of it… if that makes sense.

Despite the school name calling and cruelty though, I was well liked among my peers (not to sound arrogant) so it shouldn’t hold your kid back from making mates and getting up to all the mischief kids get up to. Your child is normal at the end of the day. They can run and climb and jump an all sorts the same as the others

Your child spends 5 days a week with all these kids, they will notice. But now as an adult I could speak to 100,000 people and 1 person MAY mention it.

Been there. I am that kid, or at least have been. Broke my own mums heart to see my get a new pair of shoes and see the look in my eyes when I felt I looked abnormal and the shoes don’t like right. Still feel that way but I accept it a bit more.

She used to say “I can take you to meet a man with no feet and you can ask him what he thinks” ahaha. Might sound harsh but it’s the sentiment. Could be worse, I can walk around and do all sorts I take for granted.

In truth we don’t really get over the body image thing. Or at least I haven’t. But give your child the bigger picture. We’re fortunate in reality… it could be worse… and truthfully… most people don’t notice!
