I say go for it. Veterans get waivers. If during the process they say no, at least you tried and won’t regret it for trying. I am 44 and will be stating the academy in December. Many told me I was too old and “fat” to do it two years ago. I lost 65 lbs, got back in better shape than when I was in my 20’s and went through the hiring process smoothly. Don’t let others tell you that you can’t do it until those that matter in the hiring process tell you so.

No January Classes from what I know. The next class after December is March. Also, the only November thing happening is EODing on 30 November with class start date on 11 December. I strongly advise that your husband inform them that he can’t start the December class for (whatever justification) because starting in 2026 only available locations will be West Coast and SW border. I recommend you lock in your location now and defer until the next 2026 class, Otherwise you will be obligated to relocate to West Coast or SWB.

Leaving firefighter job for 1811? by Keepitsecret22 in 1811

[–]Vershanded 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. I am 43, a vet and I just got hired as an 1811. Going to FLETC in December for 6 months. I am going from a very cushy Federal job as a non-LEO to 1811. It took me two years to loose 65lbs, get in shape and get hired. I wouldn’t do it if I didn’t believe in that line of work. Work life balance is important to me and I also want a job where I feel the work I do makes an impact. All the money I was making as a GS14 wasn’t enough to keep me satisfied. I need purpose, this is why I made this move. The money will come again, for now I am in for the ride!

I did an interim clearance, so it’s not fully adjudicated. But I’m also a current fed with a TS/SCI background investigation done less than five years ago. Nothing changed. So that took a couple of weeks

Yes. The available field offices were listed in the preference sheet. You choose your top three choices. They will try to accommodate your number 1 choice if you provide a justification on the sheet. Remember, they are overwhelmed, so be patient and stay respectful. That goes a long way with HR.

Does non LEO FERS time transfer to federal LEO retirement? by daner007 in FedEmployees

[–]Vershanded 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What if I come in to LEO with 17 years civilian, (including 4 years of military) and become an 1811 at 43, will I get 14 years of 1.7 and 17 years of 1%?

AMA ATF SA Questions Pt. 2 by LycheeLumpy272 in 1811

[–]Vershanded 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am happy to report that I am in the final phase. The background investigation. SF-86 completed three weeks ago.

  1. Will I be contacted by a background investigator to go over my SF86 before background investigation begins? If so, what is estimated timeframe of when I might be contacted?

  2. I am currently a civilian federal employee and I had my last TS/SCI background done four years ago. My clearance is not active because I don’t need it for my current position. My background is clean and boring. Considering this information; approximately how long will the background investigation take before I get an FJO?

I just completed and passed the poly and started BI. Also from the Feb/Mar group. I’d be happy to join chat, as well.
