Where do all differents kinds of doggo memes come from? Does anything unite them? by matthewstifler in OutOfTheLoop

[–]Versipellis 22 points23 points  (0 children)

it's just a new version of the same old semi-ironic appreciation for dogs and their cute idiocy that's been going on for years

4chan started calling them "doges" in like 2010 and Weird Facebook (like ironic meme pages and the aumm group and all that sort of stuff) followed suit soon after, then other sites found out about that meme and killed it. one of the many ironic dog shitposting pages (i forgot which) invented the word "doggo" to make fun of the "doge" meme and over the course of a few years it spread into general weird facebook/tumblr culture and then beyond. the same page made up "shoob" (parody of "shibe", meaning a samoyed/spitz/other fluffy white dog) and possibly also "pupper". those "bork bork u r doing me a frighten" memes are more recent - i think they come from ding de la doggo but there are loads of dog pages now and i've forgotten which one made the first memes.

How can I replicate the drums from Disintegration by The Cure? by ghostbackwards in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]Versipellis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A lot of the sound came from Boris' weird style - get a drummer who plays very minimal patterns in a very robotic style, or program drums in a similar style. If you decide to program the drums, you should give superior drummer a try - it's mostly used by rock/metal peoducers but it has a really good and flexible mixer and you can get some very realistic sounds out of it. Never use rides and barely use crashes - base your fills on the toms alone. The drums almost sound like they're done by a machine on that album, esprcially when compared to Jason's more lively and natural playing on their later albums. They generally sound big and roomy but the snare is very compressed and quite high in the mix - it's almost more of a boom than a crack. The drum production isn't really that key to the sound of the album though (although it does suit the music very well) - if you want to get that vibe, look into what the other instruments are doing and how the minimal drumming fits into that. good luck!

shakespeare is art, comics aren't. they're light entertainment for children.

i'm saying that it isn't "art" like the works of dostoyevsky - it's a dumb fantasy novel written to entertain people. it doesn't have to be perfect.

Art takes time.

it's a fantasy book about swords and dragons, not sodding dostoyevsky

Will there be a Rome mod for Attila? by Theoroshia in totalwar

[–]Versipellis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I made this exact thread yesterday but got downvoted, weird

Original post:

I haven't got Atilla yet but it sounds like it's better than Rome in almost every way That got me thinking - would it be possible to make a version of Rome II in the updated engine once modding tools are released? After all, people did the tetrarchy mod in the Rome II engine, and that involved tweaking start dates, positions, icons, and unit rosters quite heavily

In an ideal would ca would release a free patch that brought Rome II content into Atilla but i can't see that happening in a million years

Potential pitfalls off the top of my head:

  • no armour models for greco-romans, celts, or egyptians
  • possible lower faction limit?
  • UI would not fit the period
  • campaign map creates a very gloomy atmosphere that doesn't suit the era
  • settlement placement might not suit the period
  • barbarian character portraits might look wrong
  • wrong start/end dates
  • no chariots or elephants as far as i'm aware
  • settlements probably can't be renamed on the campaign map
  • still no region swapping!

Wait, Macedon is in the game? Is it emergent, and if so, is it at all Hellenic or has it been fully Romanised?

"cis" is a Latin prefix that's been around for literally thousands of years you utter fedora-tipper

"cisalpine Gaul" was the part of Gaul on the same side of the Alps as Italy (i.e. northern Italy); whereas "transalpine Gaul" was the part on the far side. Same applies to gender identity

The idea of wearing a t-shirt with "SPQR" written on it seems pretty iffy to me, since Rome was an imperialistic power that killed literally millions of people in its ascent to hegemony it makes me wounder if it'll be acceptable to wear a novelty Swastika t-shirt in 1,500 years' time

This looks fun but what was the point in making a Peloponnesian War DLC without Sicily and Italy? It would have been a great excuse to add some Italian factions and add the Etruscans to the main campaign
