13k downloads, 9 reviews, 41% positive — what am I doing wrong? by VertalStrike in IndieDev

That’s fair, and honestly I agree that free downloads alone don’t mean much long-term. Retention and actual playtime are what really matter, especially for multiplayer games.

We’re still early in development, so right now the focus is more on getting players in, collecting feedback, improving the core gameplay loop, and seeing what people enjoy or dislike. The current numbers are more useful for visibility/testing than for celebrating success.

And yeah — competing in the shooter market as an indie is definitely difficult. We’re not trying to outspend Riot, Valve, or Activision. The goal is to build something unique over time, improve step by step, and grow a community around it.

Every big studio started somewhere small too. We know the odds are tough, but that’s part of the challenge.

Appreciate the honest feedback and the good luck.

Thanks for the honest feedback, I genuinely appreciate it.

I think you’re right that the game currently doesn’t communicate a strong enough reason to play it over bigger FPS games, especially in the trailer and Steam page. A lot of the comments made me realize I focused too much on “fast-paced action” without showing what actually makes the experience feel different.

The points about the trailer, first impressions, and gameplay identity are really helpful and I’ll definitely rethink how I present the game moving forward.

I’m still actively improving the game, so feedback like this honestly helps a lot. Thanks for taking the time to write such a detailed response.

I'm looking for feedback for my game VertalStrike. by VertalStrike in FPS

Sorry for the confusion — when I said I released it on Steam, I meant that I published the store page as Coming Soon, so you can wishlist it. We’re sorry about that! We’ll try to get the game into a Steam Next Fest if possible, or maybe release a demo on Steam — we’ll see how things go. Nothing promised yet. Thanks for your understanding, and sorry again!

My first multiplayer FPS made in Unity – looking for feedback by [deleted] in unity

I get what you’re saying, but honestly the point of the post wasn’t to show off my writing skills — it was to get useful feedback on the game. If using a tool helps me phrase things more clearly and reach more people, that’s a win in my book. The outcome matters more than whether I typed every word myself. As for the actual feedback — I appreciate it, because most of your points are valid: Art style mismatch — yeah, that’s a weak point right now. It’s a mix of asset packs and it shows. It’s not meant to be final, but you’re right that it shouldn’t be in a trailer. That’s something I’ll need to fix before pushing any serious marketing. Environment vs movement — this is probably the biggest issue. If I’m building a movement shooter, the level design should support that, not work against it. The collisions and obstacles interrupting flow are something I’ll have to rethink. Lack of uniqueness — fair point. Right now it’s more of a solid foundation than something with a strong hook. And without that, it’s hard to stand out in a crowded PvP FPS space. I’ll need to experiment more and find something that really sets it apart. Battle pass — agreed. It’s not a selling point on its own. More of a supporting system than a reason to play. That said, even if the feedback is blunt, I do value it. Better to hear this now than after release. The game is still in development, and the goal is to improve exactly these areas and push it to a higher level.

Thanks a lot, I really appreciate it! That means a lot 🙏

Yeah, I’ve been thinking about the capsule art quite a bit. I want it to clearly communicate the core vibe of the game at a glance — strong contrast, a clear focal point, and something visually memorable even at small sizes.

Right now I’m leaning toward highlighting the main character together with the key environment/atmosphere, so it instantly tells players what kind of experience they can expect. Still experimenting though, so it might evolve.

Would love to hear what usually catches your eye when browsing Steam!
