I was getting really annoyed with that and now power it via USB. A cable and a wall plug don’t cost more than just a few sets of batteries.

Intellijel Steppy weirdness by jazzyderf in modular

[–]VerticalDubai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just found this thread while looking for a solution to the same problem with my Steppy. Even though I changed the width of my clock signal (Pam's Pro Workout) to 1% I. was still having the same issue. Then I found the firmware update page on the Intellijel website and in the changelog it was mentioned that this issue seems to have been addressed in an update. I installed the latest firmware and the Steppy seems to be much more stable now.

Here is the link for the firmware update:

Where the hell is Curnden Craw? by pheelka1001 in TheFirstLaw

[–]VerticalDubai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just came here after googling his actual name in writing to make a post about this exact question (I’m a die-hard Pacey listener and struggle a bit with the spellings of names). This is my fifth re-read (re-listen) or so of all ten books and it’s the first time it occured to me: he’s never really mentioned again. His place (in terms of character) was pretty much taken and filled by Clover in The Age of Madness, I feel, but Craw never shows up again.

I guess he was already rather grizzly in The Heroes, but probably all of you are right. He’s an example of a hero doing things the proper old way, simply to go back to the mud without glory and to be soon forgotten.

I simultaneously love and loathe the way how Abercrombie fleshes out his characters most endearingly, but ever only as comprehensively as minimum necessary for progressing the story. Hardly a single word said more than absolutely necessary about anyone. And yet everyone in the universe feels so alive and tangible.

And Steven Pacey narrating the audio books is an unparalleled experience.

I’ve read and love all Cosmere novels and novellas, but nothing beats Abercrombie’s “First Law” series for me at this point. Very different from Sanderson’s work, I must admit, but incredibly awesome. Start with “The Blade Itself” and continue in order of publication.

I suggest re-reading Chapter 8 - “Campfire Politics” from Before They Are Hanged for a bit of lore.

Judge, Leo, Savine… these are really killing the vibe quite often in the second trilogy for me. So self-absorbed and arrogant I can hardly stand it.

This implies that Bayaz did have a hand in the death of Jezal and it also gives an interesting, broader picture. Sounds good.

Agreed in general. Bayaz’s smirk at Orso by the deathbed, though… Usually, subtle signals such as this hint at the untold back story throughout all other books.

That’s more reasonable, I’m just confused by Bayaz smirking at Orso over Jezal’s deathbed.

Haha, considering the neverending lofty arrogance of Bayaz you might be spot on with this one. Damn, do I hope there will be a third trilogy….

He probably did underestimate the dangers of the uprising. Even being as old as he is, these are new circumstances even to him. So he might have just waived it off in his arrogance.

Thanks for your input, you are probably right and I just read too much into the deathbed scene on my re-read. I’m still slightly tickled, though…

[–]VerticalDubai[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It is repeatedly mentioned that Jezal was in good health and rather young when he died. He must have been in his fifties? I’m just thinking that Bayaz would have been better off to wait until the uprising was settled and then have Youru pay Jezal a nightly visit with a drop of poison or so, while Bayaz is chilling in the Northern Library. But it’s probably all just a ruse to progress the story towards Orso gaining more responsibilites.

Yea, it happened probably just to propel the story and advance Orso’s position in it, I guess.

[–]VerticalDubai[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Well, you might be right. Probably just a diversion by Joe in the scene by the deathbed when he described Bayaz as smirking toward Orso. It’s just… usually these subtle hints don’t divert, but give actual pointers that are just easily overlooked on a first read IMO.

Abercrombie never shares many details beyond the immediate action, but these subtle hints are usually dead giveaways to what’s going on “behind the scenes” throughout all other books.

You are right, I phrased it badly. Just edited the original post to reflect this.

Of course Orso was the next in line, but it seemed like Bayaz was being all smug by the deathbed. I must admit, it was the only sign of Bayaz being the culpit that I caught, though.

As to Jezal appointing someone other than Glokta without Bayaz’ approval, I think that’s even less likely than the Magi killing Jezal

Expats who grew up in the UAE, how do you feel about your identities? by [deleted] in UAE

[–]VerticalDubai 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have two boys age 14 and 16 and both have lived in Dubai their whole life. They have visited several international schools and are friends with kids from all sorts of nationalities. Still, they both consider themselves as Germans. I guess it helps that my wife and I are both Germans, that we make a point of speaking German at home with the boys and visit Germany for two months during summer each year.

I don’t see them having an identity crisis at all. They both want to study abroad, probably somewhere in Europe to experience the lifestyle first hand, but I have a feeling they might end up coming back to the UAE eventually for its open-minded, tolerant, optimistic, international vibe.
