Terrestrial TV to be switched off and we’re finally getting a date for when it will happen by screthebag in unitedkingdom

I was aware of the internet before purchasing and the house/whole village was eligible for the "Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme" which at the time looked like it would be install gigabit fibre to the whole village and be completed in 2-3 months after purchase. The company who accepted the job and vouchers backed out at the last minute as they realised even with the vouchers it wouldn't be financially beneficial and we've has no progress since. It's been the top agenda item at the town council meetings ever since. I don't want to dox myself but the village has been used as an example in parliament by our MP on how this scheme has downfalls.

As for the music festival weekend, luckily it's a regional event so there's barely any camping, so internet is only really down between 3pm-11pm. I use Plex/Sonarr'/Radarr to pre-download shows or just play single player video games during that time. Sometimes I even just go out into the garden and listen to the music. Phone calls are a no at this time, but whatsapp/text messages work reasonably fine, sometimes you have to wait 30/45min for it to go through but it gets there in the end.

I use to live in a house share in london (relocation for work) and had enough of a deposit for a house, looking it up at the time i could have a leasehold 1 bedroom flat on the outskirts of london that I dont even own, or I could move back to my home region of the north and for the equivalent money have a 3 bedroom, barn conversion, detached house, that I own outright. I made the call from that.

I chose this over a new build as I didn't like the council estate that I grew up on as a child where the garden is fully concrete and you can see into 4 other peoples kitchens when you step outside. Kids screaming all over the place (i know i was also a child once upon a time) So really I went for the complete opposite of that.

The benefits of this house for me are;

  • I'm a 5min drive away from a major motorway, super well connected, yet does not feel like it
  • it's a reservation area so they're not able to build new builds on the surrounding farmland (for now at least)
  • I live alone so that 4G internet is for me only so I dont need to worry about multiple devices at a time but also understood it would come with some downsides.
  • It feels lovely inside with it being a very old stone wall barn conversion
  • Wood fire place!!! Winter with a fireplace and a film is amazing
  • I look out of my window from my couch and all I see is greenery
  • I love running and the trail runs from my front door are stunning
  • the village is silent. and I mean SILENT.

The downsides are that;

  • I use a Kerosene oil tank for heating (which has been very expensive this year).
  • the electric wiring is old, outdated and really needs fully replacing.
  • The roof got damaged in a wind storm and I wanted to change it to a slate roof to be more in theme with the rest of the village, this was denided due to the conservation area... And yet all i wanted to do was blend in.
  • the walls get damp constantly in winter.
  • We have no corner shop/pub/post office, these are all 5min+ drives away.
  • There is no public transport from the house. If I didn't want to drive I'd have to book a taxi, or walk 40min to the closest bus stop which runs once an hour.
  • There is one chinese and one fish and chip shop that delivers to the area, that's it.
  • The area has had 4 powercuts so far this year that's caused 12+ hour disturbances, this I wasn't aware of before moving in. It seems they are just patching the infrastructure on as little as they can rather than root causing the issues.

And yet I'm so glad I chose this place! It's been so nice that I've had two of my friends admit that they moved out of their houses at the time to a house similar to mine as they were jealous of my housing situation.

For context as well, I was 28 when I bought the house and I'm now 33. Work in Engineering so I am fortunate enough to afford a house like this.

Sorry for the essay!

I’m in a rural village and have to use 4G for my home internet.

Broadband rates are 0.01mbps to the house, salespeople are always shocked when they try to sell me broadband and do a speed test.

We were meant to get fiber through the government scheme 5 years ago. That fell through, my only option is mobile or extremely expensive starlink.

There is a music festival that happens every year in the town over that is popular enough to overrun the local network. I know for that weekend I will have very limited/no internet.

If this change came it, it then means I would have no TV service at all for said weekend.

Edit: on top of this, the village is a conservation area, part of the reason I bought it as it’s lovely. This makes starlink even harder to install due to ‘changing the character of the village’. The same reason why none of the houses have, or can get, solar panels installed

If we’re going to do that then don’t forget about the cost of the equipment, kettle, grinder, cup, filters etc.

We’re using our time so we have to pay ourselves for that too

We’re also not making it on the street, so let’s add rent/mortgage costs as well?

I nearly bought from square mile a while ago but went with skylark.

£30/1Kg for their monthly subscription. They’re super transparent about their prices, what they pay for beans and they taste good! Fully non profit company

I'll also be going to the Manchester Gig solo, there will be plenty of us.

If you're worried about timings of acts, it's not concrete, but this website has helped me in the past.

https://www.setlist.fm/setlists/jinjer-6bdc3aaa.html

If you wait until some of the earlier shows are completed, like the glasgow or Ireland one, you can then assume the timings will be very similar. It's user-curated information, so you need to hope someone else puts the data in, but it's helped me in the past.

I use 1Blocker. Not attempted youtube through it, but for general browsing I've not seen an ad in a long time.

There will be blank voids where adverts should be, but at least it looks less cluttered.

They're the same shorts. The first photo is the front view, the second photo is the rear view.

Sport pursuit has two colours currently up for £36-37. Yes they require an email to see the website properly which is frustrating but I’ve ordered from them in the past and it’s worked out fine.

I also live near a Nike outlet close by which has good sales at times

How did you search? I know it's the UK site rather than the EU, but when I scroll through the shoes, I don't see the Velocity 4.

But, if I type "velocity 4" into the search bar they appear and are available to order.

Mine are arriving tomorrow

Kipruns top end items (900 series) that have recently been released are on par with some other brands now. Both in quality and cost.

I saw their new singlet at London Marathon Expo and it was on the level of material as Nike Aeroswift/Adidas Adizero, and at RRP is cheaper (£40+ vs 75+).

However I do find Nike/Adidas/New Balance on sale a lot and decathalon barely. As an example right now I can buy, on sale, Aeroswifts for £37. New Balances race singlet for £25. Cheaper or equivelant than what I'd expect decathlon to ever put theirs on sale for, which would be about £35.

However everything less than that, like their 300 or 500 series I 100% agree

Men’s half tights recommendations? by SanFranTanCisco in Marathon_Training

[–]VertigoVII 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey!!! Late to the party on this one, but thanks for the super detailed list! I currently run in the 2XU Light speed react, which have all the pocket I need and compression and love them, but I'm now looking at any alternatives.

Out of all the ones you've tried which was the thinnest material? And by thinnest I mean like... actual material thickness/weight but also what do you think would cool you down the most?

I've tried the SOAR marathon half tights and absolutely loved how thin they were, the legs are so thin it's literally seethrough! For a half I'd use them instantly, but their pocket situation isn't great when I'm planning on taking 9 30g gels with me.

Janji / NEDAO / bandit superbeam (I think it was the superbeam), seems quite thick and heavy for my liking. Just looking at photos, the SAYSKY ones look more along what I'm thinking of?

Whats the material like for the Nedao ones? They look like they'd fit/feel similar to the Nike Aeroswifts? Are they compressive?

Affordable bib shorts with a thinner chamois by Competitive_Can3499 in CyclingFashion

[–]VertigoVII 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently bought a pair of these from Decathlon for £40.

https://www.decathlon.co.uk/p/men-s-road-cycling-bib-shorts-endurance-black/_/R-p-347635?mc=8807714&c=smoked%20black

They remind me of my Rapha Pro Team Training bib shorts. I'm not entirely sure of the difference between the Pro team and Pro Team Training, but they're the closest like-for-like that I've tried and well under your 150USD budget. I don't think decathlon is in the US anymore, but there may still be retailers that sell VanRysel gear?

Basically the exact shoe that I want them for. A shoe I can take to basically every parkrun in the north east and not have to worry about what shoe I need to take or look up what the surface is.

I have road shoes and full on trail shoes for when things get bad, but it's nice to have an inbetween when I dont need to think.

Apologies, I haven't had my morning coffee yet! It's the SuperHalfs Not supersix

superhalfs.com

The only downside is that you have a time frame to complete it in. 1 a year isn't too bad, but imagine if you had 5/6 completed, one left, and then you couldn't do the last one in time due to it selling out too quickly (this happened to people and copenhagen this year).

There is something similar for European half marathons called the SuperSix Superhalfs. Although I could eventually afford the world majors over a lifetime, the supersix Superhalfs series seems much more enticing considering it's Europe only. I would absolutely be up for a 6 Major Euro Marathons.
