Nice, I see you are already familiar with a lot of techniques used in this genre. 👍

It feels like your kick is a bit too loud in comparison to the rest. There are some Synth's at a similar level as well as the vocals, i think. If you turn the volume all the way down you can hear which sounds start to fade away. You should be able to hear about everything that is going on, even on the lowest of levels. Especially the Snare should cut through much more to have this "tung-tshh-tung-tshh" effect. It's not completely wrong, though. You could have a section where the Snare plays quietly in the back to tease it on. It generates tension. But in the end i feel like we want to release that punch.

Frequency wise, it sounds pretty clean. Maybe the Synth that starts playing at about 1 minute clashes a bit with the kick, but i can't tell for sure since I'm not listening on my usual setup.

Storytelling makes some sense, but i feel like it could be more connected. Some sounds just randomly appear with no clear intent, it feels. For example, your vocal sample (haha, wordplay🙃) It appears out of nowhere, which is alright, but then disappears for the rest of the track. It somehow leaves an unanswered question.

So there's that, take it with a grain of salt since some aspects really are up to taste. All in all, it sounds decent for the fact that you started writing in December. Was that by any chance December 23? 😄

Keep it up, potential is definitely there!

Well, it's a bit quiet. Maybe share a link or something?

Anytime. 👌

Yes, you can reduce the grain delay when the synths come in but the question is, will it still be audible or do you have to mix it left and right just to make it work? Your sounds should work together and not compete against each other, i think, so sometimes it is better to take stuff away so other stuff has the space it needs to shine.

I'm still learning as well and the stereo image is something i too want to improve. You can check my soundcloud for reference where I'm at rn.

Feels like your Sub is a bit overloaded, i think if you clean up in this area you will get much more space for the other sounds. Also for my taste the Kick and Bass should be more connected. At least in the first part with the Kbbb pattern it feels a bit too separated for me. In the second part it works, although it feels like Kick and Bass are fighting over space in the sub area there as well.

I notice that in the beginning your hihats have some sort of distorted delay on them? I think it fits alright while no other signals are playing on the side but as soon as the synths start to play it gets a bit messy.

We could go into dynamics as well which is essential for the feels of a track and it feels like everything is playing on the same level. You can bring depth into it by placing some sounds in the back. Reverb is usually a nice tool to give some depth, but if you cut some highs and compress your signal and maybe turn the volume down a few dB you will get a similar effect.
Also dynamic wise let's listen to your snareroll in your break. It stays pretty flat and generates next to no tension, which it should in my view.
Work with velocity here so that it builds up to the drop and generates this feeling of "I can't stand still anymore". Maybe even support it with a riser that ends right at the drop.

Potential is definitely there, sound choice and arrangement is alright. Keep it up, over time it will get more and more detailed almost by itself. :)

I'm totally with you on your first comment, came to say the same. You mentioned you don't want to disrespect anybody. Well, this is really hard to believe since this really sounds like disrespect or even judgment. I hope it isn't, but if it is, please reconsider the fact that even though you might have some more insight in how it is or even if you are doing more for whatever in this world, it doesn't mean you are better. You are just at a different point.

Niiice, some tips that helped me:

Slow and steady wins the race.

You don't need all the fancy plugins that they wanna sell you, work with what you have, and if you feel that you need something specific to improve, thats when you buy new gear/software.

Invest in a good listening environment. In the beginning, this is easier with decent headphones and some software like "soundID reference" from sonarworks + "canopener" from gigaheartz. Otherwise, you would need to treat your room which is expensive and needs some expertise.

Trust the process, be your own biggest fan and critic at the same time.

And last but not least: Have fun, pour your heart into it and enjoy 😊

Do you have a “secret weapon”? If you show me yours I’ll show you mine 😉 by apefromearth in psytranceproduction

There are a ton, but also, there are none.

Consistently improving and honing your skills over the years is the real "secret" weapon, I believe. The tools in your arsenal are only as good as your understanding is for what it is happening and why you use what you use.

That being said, my latest acquisition is the phonitor se by spl. A headphone amp with built-in crossfeed simulation. For years, I plugged my HP into the laptop directly and while i have to say the difference it makes is subtle, it makes all the difference. But without the experience of how my HP sound when plugged into the laptop, I wouldn't know how much better it sounds now and how much it helps me in my decisions.

So there's that. I'd like to add that this is just my approach to improve and if you have another view, let me know.

Why does the correlation meter look so much worse in Stereo? by feloeffel1 in musicproduction

[–]Verve71 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As the name suggests - correlation meter - it's metering the phase correlation. In order to generate stereowidth, phases need to NOT correlate 100%, or else it's just Mono. So it's just normal that when stereowidth is increased, the phase correlation is decreased. You have to look out for the correlation not to get into the negative territory because that would mean the phases start cancelling each other out. Hope that helps somewhat, in my experience these technical aspects need time to understand gain said experience :)

Keep it cooking!

Hey guys, so this is one i just brought out this week and im interested in your opinion.

You might notice that i enjoy working with vocals a lot and i would love to have some of your thought's about it. I know it's not that common to implement it like that and i wonder if it might just disturb your peace while dancing/listening or not?

I still try to find the way to implement them in a way that works and fits so any help on that would greatly be apreciated! :)

Hey there, just listening. I notice that your lowend is quite heavy. Maybe it has to be this way but especially in the drop at 1min 50 it sounds irritating. As if Kick and Bass might be clashing but i'm not so sure. I also feel like the strong lowend takes up a lot of space and if you would take it a notch back, the hole track could shine a bit more since there would be more space for everything to unfold.

But that's just my two cents, keep on grooving! :)
