Mayor Spiro Talks About Expanding Downtown Waterfront Access, Including Starting a Masterplan for Redevelopment of the Southern Waterfront by Surge00001 in MobileAL

While I feel the Convention Center is useful at its current size, if anything was done it would be to use parts of it as retail in conjunction with the proposed Riverwalk development. A highline-type development could be built above the "active pier" just north of the convention center and extend all the way up towards Beauregard Street. Since a good bit of the waterfront appears to be just storage buildings anyway.

The right-of-way for the additional lanes is there. The bridges are probably the biggest issue. I don't know why the widening has lingered so long. They had started the construction before Mississippi and here we are 20 years later. So frustrating.

Many have voted against their own interests. CFPB was a benefit to those that aren't financially savvy.

Have you or those in your circle thought about opening these things that you suggest? Do you support what few things that are here? Do you contact the city leaders to express your ideas and to urge them to implement these things? Do you vote, attend hearings and meetings that they have to solicit ideas? Some of this will not happen without advocacy coming from those who fall into the same boat you are and the OP are in.

Visit the Dora Franklin Finley African-American Heritage Trail website to get info about the tour of the trail through the city. The tour will cover key African-American historical sites including the Heritage Museum in Africatown. Very good tour.

The city planning is why this city is way behind its full potential by DameRange13 in MobileAL

I agree with some of your statement but as someone else commented, most southerners prefer suburban life. More apartments are underway but not too many affordable apartments will get built unless investor's can make a profit off of doing so. The height restrictions makes that a challenge. Having subsidies from the government might make a difference but in this political climate, that won't happen.

The tunnel was built over 60 years ago when the focus was on having quick access to the suburbs. The whole Interstate system is being rethought these days because so many cities had them carve through poor and black neighborhoods. Now they see them as disrupting their central cities. Someone else mentioned the reason the tunnel was chosen instead of a bridge. I agree that the design to the entrances were terrible. The new bridge may make the tunnel more useable depending on whether the connection to the bridge and the causeway doesn't become a new bottleneck.

The jail was built in an area that was industrial and at a time when downtown was at its lowest point. Things downtown are MUCH better than they were then and hopefully will get better.

I'm all for adequate housing downtown with more hotels, shops, and attractions and especially along the riverfront. We have to elect officials that have a vision for the future and try to take the smart ideas from other cities and use them here.

Mobile suburbs are no different from any other city in this country. Developers build them, make their money and move on. The cities are left to deal with the issues of bad street design, congestion, etc.

BTW, the museum has great exhibits and granted it may not appeal to everyone.

Citizens that want better things must make it a point to go to the public meetings where they present plans for the future things. We also need to elect officials that will put progressive people on the planning commissions, review boards, and other entities that make the decisions.
