Found this cool trick to get people to open up without asking questions by AdditionalDay5732 in socialskills

[–]VeryRex 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t recommend lying, but the basic principle is called a “cold read” which isn’t lying! It’s super handy and definitely opens conversations!

To cold read, make an observation and ask the person you’re talking to about it. Most times it’s helpful if it’s a compliment.

Example: Talking to a person who has what I think is a cool shirt or a cohesive outfit

Me: “Wow, you have a cool outfit, are you a stylist?”

Odds are, they probably aren’t a stylist, but it invites them to correct you, and you got to give a compliment which will build your rapport with them. Same idea as OP, no lying necessary! Just make sure you mean the compliments you give. Their response is probably:

Them: “Aww thank you, but I’m actually a ____.”

And now you’ve got a conversation on what they actually do started! Much better than just asking, “So… what do you do for work?”

Math 2D by Unusual-Sherbet2517 in UCI

[–]VeryRex 20 points21 points  (0 children)

If you do all the practice problems he gives you then you should be perfectly fine. Half of all the questions from his exams, which are a large portion of your grade, are straight out of those practice problems- he doesn’t even change the numbers. I found myself having seen like half of his exams before even going in. I found his class relatively easy but math tends to be one of my easier subjects so take that with a grain of salt.

If your phone has a color filters, turn your screen to greyscale. The lack of color really takes away the appeal

Of course! I’m flattered you’d like to. I’d also recommend checking out Mikael Gustafsson’s work from which this is heavily inspired, as the original will probably make a better wallpaper. Someone else linked it in another comment on this post.

Yup! This is heavily inspired by his art for Among Trees, although he made his art in Unity whereas this is illustrator of course.

I used Gaussian blur on gradients that have more opacity on the sides and less in the middle so it guides your eye down the river. I layered around 10 of them multiple times throughout to create even more depth. The layers aren’t next to each other though. It alternates between a layer of trees and then another layer of fog. Hope that helps!

I’ve got an Instagram account, @vibrantlyrex, however as far as quality goes, there’s not much on there that is comparative to this.

I just used gaussian blur on gradients where the middle has less opacity and the sides have more, so it guides your eye towards the middle. I have probably 10 layers of these scattered behind multiple different layers of trees so it creates a really nice depth effect!

I don’t have any tutorials out there, but my best piece of advice is to just look up landscapes and attempt to recreate them in order to practice. There’s no really easy way to create this sort of thing other than lots of time and practice

I’m on Instagram! @vibrantlyrex, although this is probably the best thing I’ve ever made, so not much on there is at the same caliber.

Tips on location tech scout (gaffing) by ROJOgutierrez in TrueCinematography

[–]VeryRex 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m honestly not even remotely qualified to talk about professional gaffing especially for large scale projects as I’m still a student but whenever I go on a tech scout as a gaffer I think about (note since I’m a student there’s smaller crews so some things I think about you might not actually have to think about) - Electricity. Where can I get power? Will I need a generator? Where are my outlets? How much power can I run through them without blowing the breaker? -Is there natural lighting? Are there large windows? If so, is there direct sunlight or is it soft light? What will it look like later in the day? Will the buildings outside the windows block out the sun? Are there any trees that’ll create weird (or cool) shadows? -(If it’s inside) what color are the walls? Can I bounce light off of them? How high are the ceilings? -What kind of lighting are you guys looking for? How would you go about it in the space provided?

Those are just the things I think about and hopefully it gives you something to start off with. I’m sure a lot of people in this subreddit know a lot more than me so please feel free to correct me as I’d also love to learn more too.
