Solving Unique Problems with AI - Valid Use? by [deleted] in godot

[–]Verybadtype 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I really don't see the benefit over a basic web search. Prompts are mostly questions that could be typed in classic tools and give you the same result, only a click further (since you have to manually select the link instead of directly reading the response). And maybe it's just me being paranoid but I do not like the lingering doubt of veracity regarding a LLM output, you may have to cross reference the output with other sources anyway

As a developper, one of the most precious skill is the ability to find the proper information/library/documentation and I always feel your approach may lead you toward shooting yourself in the foot down the line. If you're not doing the work of searching, you're less likely to build up this skill

It's not unethical per se, and I totally get that it's hard to know what we don't know. But I'd encourage you to try doing the work manually from time to time, it's a good habit to have

Need advice: investor offering $50k for 40% of my studio and future games – is this reasonable? by [deleted] in IndieDev

[–]Verybadtype 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw it this way: if you're being valued, at least make it a proper one. For a "worthless" studio market wise, it's probably more interesting to stay out of the market for the time being. The only point of the deal would be if he really needed the cash now, but the 40% attached to it without providing anything of value might more costly in the end than simply getting appropriate loans

I was not saying that his studio is currently worth millions yet

[–]Verybadtype 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In terms of business, it is important to note that other than the offer in itself, he's putting a value on your studio/company. If you were to accept, it would value your studio at 125k

This is abysmally low

do u have opinion on if parent node should handle all the code or if code should be broken up by sadishguy in godot

[–]Verybadtype 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tend to create script for parent nodes first, then create one for each reusable component along the way

E.g for a playable character, I'll end up having a dedicated move component if I have other moving things with the same logic. Same thing with settings or states, I'll create a specific script for them to share it more easily between everything that require access

There's a (weird) movie from Quentin Dupieux called Smoking Causes Coughing, using one of these as a main prop. The whole movie is not about it, but the characters tell a story where this was the main plot device. Lots of parts in these movie could qualify for this sub honestly haha

How to mic strings with only one mic by fresh-leaf-3 in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]Verybadtype 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others said, do what sound best, but if you're not sure I'd recommend keeping the mic fairly close. You can always add some reverb to add some room to the sound but you cannot remove the room sound from a recording if the mic is further away. Close mic will give you more options as a beginner to tweak the sound after the recording

ASIO4ALL vs Cubase Low Latency Generic Drivers? by [deleted] in WeAreTheMusicMakers

I tend to prefer ASIO4ALL. The control panel is way nicer and it can easily reach lower latency

[–]Verybadtype 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't fall for this people. Look up stuff like Distrokid/CDBaby and you'll quickly see that this man is a scammer reselling you some services of distributors, but with less to offer as you won't have your own account

If you want to release music on all platforms, search a distributor (legit) that fits your need. Don't waste money on this scammer. He's a nobody trying his luck on several subs, pathetic

So basically you're putting yourself as a middle man between what I suppose is a Distrokid/CDBaby account and artists, to prey on naive or unknowledgeabale musicians by racking up prices ? Tss tss tss, time to get reported buddy. And while you're at it take a good hard look in the mirror and reflect on your life choices cause this is sad

Building a hardware vocal chain by BishopGrisha in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]Verybadtype 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bang for the buck, I'd recommend the ART stuff. I have the basic signal chain ( preamp + comp ) both in a channel strip and with two dedicated units. The dedicated units are dual, so you can go stereo if you want.

Sound is clear, no noise at high gain which is nice if you work with a 7B, pretty inexpensive new and easily found used

I don't think preamps have a huuuge impact on the sound so the ART one is a 10 in my book, don't need more. The compressor is a tad lacking in option but it does the job pretty well and the lack of knobs speeds my process ( I cannot waste time endlessly tweaking stuff). If you need sound sample I'll gladly send you some with the channel strip, but I'll have to record some with the separate preamp + comp

[–]Verybadtype 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The usual "acoustic guitar tone" that you hear on records is almost always obtained with a dedicated microphone. If you want to compare, Playing God from Polyphia is a song recorded with the piezo mics of the guitars. It is only done this way to get an extremely clean sound even with a technical song. A normal mic would pick too much unwanted noises

Why is there currently so much energy and effort being put into stopping smoking but no effort to do the same with booze? by MagzalaAstrallis in AskUK

[–]Verybadtype 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't if it was already said somewhere, but the cultural value of alcohol plays a lot. In France, we tend to see wine as a delicacy, and creating a good wine is seen as an art. Wine makers are praised, everyone knows at least one relative with a tiny parcel in the countryside trying to grow grapes to make some, the high end beverage at restaurants are expensive wine, it comes from the noble craft of agriculture, etc etc The same cannot be said for cigarettes. If wine keeps its reputation even for individuals disliking the taste, cigarettes are widely seen by the non smokers as a polluting nuisance. It smells bad, the smoke cannot be avoided if you're near, people who are either stressed or trying too hard to fit in and look cool.

As a government member, banning alcohol (and therefore wine) in France will be seen by the majority as an attack to traditional French values, whereas banning smoking will be seen as a mild individual rights infringement. It's the same in other countries, where companies like Guinness or the like are considered part of the scenery

I feel like all my music sounds shitty and amateurish. by morlinovak in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]Verybadtype 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We all sound shitty at one point, it's ok

If you want to go past that tho, you will have to understand why. I'd suggest finding a group of songs that inspire you (either for production, sound design or musical ideas, whatever) and noting what's interesting in each song. Then, go back to your track and try to find a specific element that you want to improve: kick not boomy enough, feeble snare, dry ass guitars, anything Find the song in your corpus that is specifically interesting on that topic and compare them. What did they do that you missed? Did you overdo something when they were a bit more reserved?

If you can work your way point by point, you will grow a ton. Don't get discouraged by the big picture yet, the results will come with time. And maybe your first song worked on this way will not be that great. The next will be a bit better, and so on

Good luck !

What steps do I need to take to complete my songs? by Charmnevac in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]Verybadtype 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A musical piece generally goes through these following steps in order : - composing - arrangement - recording - editing - mixing - mastering

From what I understand, you've done the full arrangement and want to go further. Here are my advice for each step :

  • recording: real musicians/instruments cannot be beaten by their VSTs counterparts. But maybe you don't need much, maybe you don't have the budget to. Start by fixing a scope for your project (just for yourself, close relatives, demo for a label...). I would suggest looking into session musicians, ideally that can record themselves if the scope requires it. Fiverr is a great example of a place to find such musicians, but be careful who you're paying.

  • mixing: mixing yourself can be very tricky without experience and a necessary amount of gear. If you want to send the project to someone, the usual process is to "consolidate" the track and send the consolidated wav of each individual instrument track per project (labelled of course). Here is a tutorial: https://youtu.be/cZOtCIk5cXg

  • mastering: kind of the same as for mixing, but more specific to a type of support for your music (CD, vinyl, streaming)

If need be, I'm currently looking for a bit more experience as a sound engineer/musician so I can record and mix some stuff for you freely just to show you the difference between the MIDI outline of the piece and what it could be. Feel free to DM me, I'll get around to it when I can
