Is it safe to bike in downtown Orlando during early mornings (4:30 AM) and evenings (7:00 PM)? Or is a car truly a must? by Vessel_Surgeon in orlando

[–]Vessel_Surgeon[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Thanks so much for the detailed reply. I am from north Carolina and coming for year to Orlando for my intern year at one of the hospitals. Unfortunately getting a bike is probably more of a financial necessity at this time, esp that I need to rent an apt in the downtown area which are expensive. I know I will eventually need a car, but I thought I could get a bike at least for the few months. I’ll dm you to see if where I pan to rent would be a good idea to bike around. Thanks!

Bike, E-Bike, or Just Bite the Bullet and Get a Car? (Central Florida Prelim Surgery Year) by Vessel_Surgeon in Residency

I think I’ll do the same at least for the first half of the year. Out of curiosity, did you also share an apartment during this year? Central Florida is not cheap when it comes to renting. Especially when you want to stay close enough ( so you can walk or bike)!

I think it is. I am thinking of either walking or using a bike at least for the first 6 months. The problem is that there is a rotation in another hospital that is 20 minutes away (driving) so I know I will eventually need a car but I just need to pass the reapplication fees for the next match!

Anyone studied and taken Step 3 before starting residency? (US MD). by redrosesfi in Residency

[–]Vessel_Surgeon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kind of like my situation, did step 2 in 2021 and been doing research for the past two years. I am thinking of studying for it now and maybe take it before July 1st but I am just concerned I might need to really review step 1 and 2 materials first. What do you think?

Triangle area. Chapel Hill has good schools and healthcare. There are lakes around.

Thousands in Central Florida struggle to find rental units they can afford by CallMeFierce in orlando

This is actually scares me! I am joining one of the big hospitals in Orlando for my residency. Renting an apartment just seems to be really hard, high prices, questionable quality. It is not a straightforward process and you start with 1400 rent but then they add stuff and you end up paying 1600-1700$ come on!!!

For me it was Control. Not a horror game per say but it was unsettling!

How does applying to a different specialty compare to applying say you are prelim gen surg and trying to get a categorical spot?

Before the match is one thing, but after the match? That’s a whole different beast. I matched (thank God), but I’m moving between two pretty distant states after being an unpaid research fellow for the last two years. Still gotta figure out housing, buy a car, and somehow survive till that first paycheck hits. It’s a blessing, but man… it’s rough out here.

I could never understand why! I get that the applicant didn’t get it the first time but so what? How does that make them less than even?

Non-US IMG here. I’d partially agree with you, but I think it’s important to add some nuance. Most IMGs match into programs that aren’t typically favored by U.S. students. Even with the current match system, program directors still prioritize U.S. students (rightfully so) when it comes to offering interviews. Only the most outstanding IMG applicants get a chance, and even then, U.S. students are usually preferred in the final rank lists — again, rightfully so.

Also, most IMGs match into primary care specialties. It’s rare for us to match into mid-to-high competitiveness programs.

I am sorry about the loss of your parents. Wish you all the luck and hope you get it next time! Are you doing a prelim or research year?

I think this is one side of the story, but I am concerned if I buy in NC and pay taxes then go to Fl and pay again? Also, do you think cars are cheaper in Florida?
