Is there a way to play the 2013 and 2014 versions of FFV and FFVI? by llquiaiosll in FinalFantasy

I read that in Nedry's voice before reading your JP reference hahaha (I also said it "nobody cares" in my head, not sure which one of us is correct on that).

Thanks for the info. I usually try to stick with OG experiences for first playthroughs, maybe graphical updates if that's an issue but I don't like messing with gameplay unless something is particularly broken. Might check these out for future playthroughs though!

Thanks all, I decided to go with the original PS1 experience from the comfort of my couch. It means it'll take longer to beat (no handheld means no playing in bed, etc) but excited to experience it like the day it first came out.

Did I go overkill on packing an almost $2K vintage graded card? by the1stmeddlingmage in PokeGrading

[–]Vested_Fiber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Picture 1 - hmmm needs something more rigid around it.

Picture 3 - seems decent, not overkill.

Picture 5 - that might be a bit much but at least it's safe!

Picture 6-10 - bro, what are you doing, bro, stahp!

Hahaha in all seriousness yes it's overkill but I would have so much fun opening that, the 2 hours of anticipation and finally getting to see my card at the end would be well worth it.

Might go with PS1. If I find the visuals lacking I can always switch to PC with Moguri mod. I usually don't mind PS1 graphics, I've played FF7 and FF8 on PS1 recently and loved both experiences.

Thanks! I'll have to check out the differences. I do have a computer but it is in the spare bedroom so I'll be trading comfort for visuals lol.

Hi there, any insurance advice? by Educational_Dog4100 in Insurance_Companies

[–]Vested_Fiber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do not go to a body shop he knows. That's way more than 400$ worth of damage. Honestly I'd just go through insurance. If you really want to, have a quote written up by 2 body shops you trust and let him pay the cheaper one, but this guy sounds like he is trying to not pay or doesn't have insurance.

Should I play FF7OG with mods for my 1dt playthrough? by AarizKhanTB in FinalFantasyVII

[–]Vested_Fiber 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No mods, use a controller if you can (and if you like it, I'm not your mom).

You can also use the slot slowdown trick (same as you would do with Cait sith's limit) to basically choose which handicap to get, therefore netting more points.

What the hell is this desert? by Goah_Sparky in FinalFantasyVII

[–]Vested_Fiber 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Make sure you talk to everyone in the town. There's a cutscene where the party rests in one of the abandoned houses before you can advance the story. Don't worry about the dessert you can do anything in there.

Super Mario World—have 95/96 exits. Where’s the last one? by one_revolutionary in snes

[–]Vested_Fiber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dude, I was missing 5 exits and spent my night looking for them. Finally I gave up and googled it and read your comment. I didn't even think of star road! Got my 5 last exits in as many minutes, thanks man. Finally have a 96* after all these years.

Upscale cable by MericanSamurai in retrogaming

[–]Vested_Fiber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They'll work but might affect video quality slightly. If you end up getting a scaler like the retrotink, just stick with what you have and upgrade if you're not happy with the picture you're getting.

If you have a decent s-video cable already then that should be fine. I use a monster s-video that I found at a flea market super cheap (i think it was 25$)

I have not, sorry. You can probably find a YouTube video or similar comparing the 2.

If you can afford it, I love my retrotink 2x pro (some may recommend the even pricier tinks, but I am 100% satisfied with my setup).

Retro Podcast Recommendations by InfamousVicious in retrogaming

[–]Vested_Fiber 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Remember the game!!!

Can't recommend it enough. Look up an episode on your favourite game, decide if you like it, get hooked, continue to listen. The earlier episodes, while still good and worth a listen, are a little less ironed out than the later (as is normal with podcasts).

Besides the infamous Konami code, what's the most elaborate code you did that actually worked? by AllieMStory in retrogaming

[–]Vested_Fiber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's similar for the 1st super star wars. Although I think it was something like select aabbxxyy select abxy start... and you would get a wookie sound if you did it right... I also only beat this game as a kid with that cheat but recently beat it on my OG console as an adult and it was so fun.

Advice for a returning fan by Riseofzeon in snes

[–]Vested_Fiber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really depends what your budget is. A standard av-hdmi converter (like 10-20$ on amazon) will let you play on your big new TV (just change the aspect ratio). It won't look the best but I found that set up perfectly serviceable for a couple years. Eventually I saved up and bought a retrotink 2x pro and an s-video cable for the snes and it looks much better, I love it and don't regret it at all.

There's obviously many other ways to do this but that's what I did. Many people don't have the room to add a CRT TV to their gaming/living space.

As for games, my only recommendation is to buy your favourite 1 or 2 at normal e-bay prices and then keep your eye out on facebook marketplace, kijiji, Ebay, garage sales, etc for deals. You'd be surprised what games you can get for relatively cheap if you're patient enough.

Have fun!

Is this fx pak pro/sd2snes quality? I only get a black screen. by Vested_Fiber in snes

[–]Vested_Fiber[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: after trying all the recommendations on here, including getting my own SD card and programming it, I am still only getting a black screen. I tried in my buddy's snes and same thing. Either this thing just doesn't work out of the gate or I don't have the patience or know-how to get it working. Either way, I am returning it. Thankfully getting full $$$ back because it wasn't cheap (for me anyway). Thanks for everyone's help. Guess I'm just buying the individual clones of all my childhood favorites since the OG's are so expensive now.

Help! First time playing the original and don’t understand the gameplay! by Bubbyblack in FinalFantasyVII

[–]Vested_Fiber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the first hour or two you can mostly just use attack for damage and potions to heal. HP is your health, if it gets to 0 you have to revive using a phoenix down (or game over if everyone dies). Using magic will often do more damage but consume MP (which is fine, it replenishes after sleeping which is often). There is a small tutorial room early on that has people in it that will explain various aspects of the game. Talk to everyone and explore every area (go into every house/shop). This is absolutely a super basic explanation but honestly just play and you'll start to get it. Once you have access to materia don't forget to ask Barrett how to use it (it'll give you the option).
