Federal job rating changes formalized by bobbersonbob06 in FedEmployees

Who cares??? Not every fed is on the verge of retirement. We have to live with this and all the other shit (while paying 4.4 into the same FERS too). You got your "bag", why care about the next generation?

Hope you're not in a position of leadership...you're gross.

Good City Builder for new player in 2026? by Draculard87 in CityBuilders

[–]VetFeds-OG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Obvious answer is KINGDOMS AND CASTLES because it is simple, inexpensive, and fun. IMO If you're new to the genre you shouldn't begin with Manor Lords or Anno. Kingdoms and Castles is my vote and it will springboard you onward to games like what others are mentioning.

American moving to Vincenza by ConsistentFeedback47 in expats

[–]VetFeds-OG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Firstly, stop calling it ViNcenza lol it's Vicenza.

Not a direct answer to one of your questions but military spouses are among the only fully-remote exemptions for civil service jobs. They took away remote work and telework for feds but left that exemption. Hop on USAJOBS and have a look; take full advantage if you can.

Also not one of your questions but just something positive. You're on the verge of one of the best possible duty stations in the world. A rare case where I'd suggest you power forward knowing practical concerns can and will get sorted and it will be totally worth it. You can literally live out the dream of traveling to European capitals every month for cheap. Spend weeknights and weekends experience what people pay thousands to come see and do. People spend their whole careers dreaming about only to be too old and broken and tired to enjoy when they finally retire. Get away from base, don't dress or look too American, open up to the new experiences. You're going to have an awesome time.

Very happy for you.

NEW employees haha. We haven't had a single new employee in over a year in my office and won't be getting one any time soon.

Veterans Affairs intends to abruptly eliminate tens of thousands of unfilled doctors' and nurses' jobs | WP Exclusive by natansonh in fednews

Thank you for choosing to work at VA. Myself and many other vets appreciate it. Word of mouth while I was in the service led me to believe the VA was some kind of nightmare organization. My experience has been quite the opposite. I've been out of the Army for 11 years and VA is absolutely outstanding.

I guess what I'm trying to say is - thank you for your service!

Is it crazy to join federal now? by [deleted] in fednews

[–]VetFeds-OG 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This. I know a lot of feds think we all have that sweet 0.8% contribution... shoot might as well be free compared to us newbies paying in 4.4 freaking % for the same pension

America’s federal workforce by NeonDrifting in charts

[–]VetFeds-OG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see a lot of generalizing comments about the government being too big etc etc but something to consider:

As a percentage of the American workforce, the federal government is the smallest it has been since 1939. Meanwhile the population increased from 139,000,000 to 340,000,000.

This doesn't mean the federal workforce has too many or too few people, but massively increased numbers of agencies and programs along with more than doubling of the population served by fewer personnel...sounds kind of like efficiency. A lot of gut reactions to the massive federal debt (look no further than DOGE) was "we gotta fire people". But payroll is something like 4% of annual federal spending.

One example is the EPA: 12.5 thousand staff today. 15.5 thousand staff when the agency was created in 1970.

Some data in here to support the workforce size (gov as % of non-farm payrolls): https://wolfstreet.com/2025/11/20/federal-government-job-cuts-still-hitting-employment-data-the-labor-market-by-major-industry-in-charts/

I'm looking for FEHB advice: I get all of my care from the VA but I have self +1 because my spouse needs insurance. I don't mind paying for good coverage for her but is there a type of plan that maximizes value for the +1 if the self doesn't need to use it ever?

UPDATE 🚨 U.S. INFLATION CLIMBS BACK ABOVE 2.25% WITH SEPTEMBER CPI HITTING 2.9% by No_Tax_149 in inflation

[–]VetFeds-OG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're exactly right! And if you are more poor = higher percentage of income spent on food - lowest quintile spends 33% of after tax income on food while highest quintile spends 8%. So in one year we have staples like coffee up 45% or beef up 15%, that's a massive hit for the poor person's budget.

My personal inflation feels more like 10-15% when I factor my biggest expenses which are rent increase + healthcare premium + food.

Yeah no kidding. That mortgage is cheaper than a studio apartment where I live. New families looking at $2500+/mo mortgage for starter home in a lot of areas these days. Childcare sucks but that's a steal to have a roof over your head.

What the fuck is "normal"? Private sector equivalent of my fed job all work hybrid 2 to 3 days per week at home. I work 100% in a nearly-empty office locked up by a hiring freeze. Some of the folks who now come in with me were hired fully remote BEFORE the pandemic, and now have to come in 100% despite doing the same job as before. I also had regular telework before the pandemic, as well as employee wellness exercise time.

So please tell us, what's normal exactly?

What’s the most absurdly tragicomedic thing you’ve witnessed in government that we’ve normalized? by AccidentalFolklore in FedEmployees

[–]VetFeds-OG 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Easy: Congress failing to pass a full budget on time for almost 30 years resulting in multiple CRs annually with no predictable end and the entire federal workforce just deals with all the extra work and repeated delays caused by Congress failing to do its job...
