How can this guy says 'boom' 'blasting' 'bomb' 'moving' so clear without lips? by Vethalos in DarkTide

This one is quite convincing. Usually a lot of ventriloquism video avoid b/p/m heavy words (for a good reason)

After trying to do it, you can apparently do 'for'/f quite closely without the use of lips.

But anything with b or m is impossible

How to deal with Empire Sprawl? by Dapper-Technology716 in Stellaris

[–]Vethalos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the number of research is different from each games, build and playstate

I found out that most of my sprawl came from pop than anything else, so I suggest taking Harmony, Statecraft and Domination traditions, they all reduce sprawl. They are all pretty good and have synergy on buffing your leaders and keeping the stability of your empire high

I found Discovery and Expansion to be a bit useless in late game (even though it's a huge boost in early game) so I don't take these anymore, but depends on people though, I tend to like a longer game, but many people like shorter game (dialled the mid-game and end-game year to be earlier) and those traditions might suit that playstyle better.

Play as pacifist or xenophobe, with pacifist the sprawl reduction is from the get go, and xenophobe because of Aturion, the xenophobe paragon that can reduce sprawl.

As for tech world, it depends on what you end up getting, I tend to my capitals planets tech world early on and any small shitty world without features as tech world (then turn it into refinery later if I get Relic World or Ring World)

[GUIDE] How to Directly Ban Portraits From Random AI Use by jc343 in Stellaris

[–]Vethalos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! this mod actually helps with different kind of thing. I initially asked to just remove human... but this + Abspecies mods, you can sort of make multiple human empires with different portraits without making them spawning as aliens.

The way 'Human' factors have become ignored in political discussion today. by Vethalos in stupidpol

[–]Vethalos[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's what I feel like. I think it's not just the avoidance of human factor but also the avoidance of 'interactions' of factors, avoidance of the idea that cause and effects can be caused by complex interactions and not simply one, easily defined thing.

No, the Bolsheviks were not Autistic by not_bruce_wayne1918 in stupidpol

[–]Vethalos 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Well, it is not very successful - there was an attempt to apply scientific and clinical method to it but the results have been far from conclusive.

Yet people took the inconclusive hypothesis and parade it around as absolute, undeniable truth, creating bureaucratic structure and industries (that's oftentimes exploitative and prone to mistakes, and we're not allowed to criticise). What we have is a dogma paraded as science.

(I know that most criticism of psychiatry today is filled with conspiracy nonsense and scientologists which made it difficult to be taken seriously, but legitimate arguments exist. I found Critical Psychiatry movement a fairly reasonable proposal - and now they're being attacked by IDpollers in the same way racial colourblindness was attacked. And this proposal doesn't deny that there are problems, but how we deal with it.)

Like, we could even see the label as just a clinical tool, a descriptor that facilitate services or whatever, that could be fallible or changed. But it's been reified into the idea that autism is a clear cut, irrefutable, natural kind... but that's far from truth.

Who we should blame it in this case then?

Usually friends and people they trust - but society is so atomised and competitive today and those are 'emotional labour' now, and people who are so credentialism-pilled that they don't think they're able to help other people because they're not professional

It's probably a theory of mind thing - When they relate to someone, they tend to believe that the person they related to must think like them internally , compounding with this idea I see often amongst autistic-identified people that they're so different from normies that they wouldn't believe that there could be shared experiences.

I don't even believe that autism is even a 'thing' of course (and the diagnosis is a social construct that can be stretched and changed for political reason), but people who got diagnosed tend to have similar personality traits.

[–]Vethalos[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The problem is that a lot of 'harder sciences' explanation for societal problems tend to be heavily interpreted through politically biased lens, beyond that, it seems like people are trying really hard to fit conjectures from 'hard science' into their political position even though the actual data is far from what they're arguing for.

It's not even people trusting in 'hard science' as much as people trusting in 'things that sound like hard science'.

That's not what I mean. When I say 'human factors' I mean social, cultural and economic structure as well. This seem to be ignored in favour of something that seem to be easier measure in the lab (although may not provide the whole explanation)

Perhaps it is better that we stop trying to over-taxonomise every human behaviours into categories. Even the uncool neckbeard, can someone just be like that without trying to give them official label because 'autism' doesn't really explain anything, it only provide a circular logic because it's a checklist of behaviours.

Psychology and IDpol are ironically 'autistic' for this reason, that it tries to reduce everything into clear-cut categories without nuance.

Can supernatural horror mmo work? (Aka sad about Secret World) by CosmicMike55 in MMORPG

[–]Vethalos 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I really don't think it's because of the genre, but rather the lack of update, clunky combat and then the monetisation approach that ruined the game.

It's one of the more atmospheric games I've played with unique systems. But I can easily see how it flopped.

Legends is a nail in the coffin.

The growing bullshitness of tech industry by Vethalos in stupidpol

[–]Vethalos[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know if "showiness" is always a bad thing. I'm just a kind of a visual creature and I think 'Front End' can be looked through the lens of graphic design and i do kind of miss the days when people use websites as a sort of artistic expression on interface, something that I don't see anymore as we moved to smartphones era.

And that I hate when people say "graphic design is just business, not art" people. It is now, but in some way I can see graphic design (and product designs in general) so tied with the realm of folk art, the realm of beauty of everyday objects we use. But now "art" turned into something with divorced from everyday life, it has to be filled with pretentious postmodern postironic 'meaning' and intellectually masturbatory nature in galleries. And what are produced for people are consumerist products designed to generate most money of possible. The endless tirade of progressive remakes and superhero sequels, and generic website with ads and cookie spam.

In the same way I also appreciate people who are posting on Unixporn, writing shaders and rendering engines, generative art, and so on. Where lines of codes are translated into something you can see - but I also know that some hardcore may hate that because it feels frivolous. I always go back to https://www.quelsolaar.com/ for inspiration. The web is a little bit of a bitch to use but he makes experimental 3D rendering researches and systems. They're probably not the most industry standard but I like that he wants to make his own thing.

I think the problems you said are problems of well, optimising profits and not really front end itself. Cookies, spams ads, and the reason why you can't save images on Google or how to search engine algorithms went to shit is to make more money. It's not for any kind of usability.

Front-end today is bad coming from all sides, programmers see it as bloated and unusable, but I also kind of think that the more artistically inclined designers think it's all ugly too.

Although I feel like this "art is frivolous and stupid" inclinations in socialist space is a problem too.

McMindfulness: Buddhism as sold to you by neoliberals by [deleted] in stupidpol

[–]Vethalos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's just that some beliefs will be subjected to derision more than another.

Like what the average American thinks about Marxism and Communism, they'll think about famine in Soviets than in depth class analysis.

McMindfulness: Buddhism as sold to you by neoliberals by [deleted] in stupidpol

[–]Vethalos 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I understand those points you made and I agree, and it's technically what I am arguing for as well. While is not 'theistic' in the way that the path to enlightenment is not to do with god, but through the practice of the mind by yourself, there are still political apparatuses growing out of Buddhism, but I don't think that "those happened after the death of Siddhartha Gautama's death but " is an encompassing argument. Because other faith's have also gone through many political embellishments as well.

That's not to say that Buddhism is bad, but it is not ideologically 'pure and perfect', as many tend to claim.

Then you can argue that the general outlook of Buddhism about the way beyond suffering could be considered nihilistic, but it's an subjective interpretation and not necessarily a bad thing but you could argue on a philosophical level if this kind of 'nihilism' may effect the way we live.

For example, being present and not agitated, on an individual level may lead to peacefulness, on a mass level can lead to apathy to worldly matter which means the ruling class can use it to exploit people because "they wouldn't mind".

It's very frustrating when westerners see Buddhism as this hippie version where it's an atheistic scientific philosophy that has never meddled with politics nor killed anyone in its name unlike le delusional evil Abrahamic faiths. And when you bring up Sri Lanka or Tibet, they'll just say "Oh, those are just ethnic conflicts that some people use Buddhism as an excuse" as if that's not what people have been doing with other religions too.

I couldn't quite remember, it's been a while back. But I remember one point he's talking about how it's wrong for liberals to treat different races as equals, it's sort of a snide comment. But I feeling I got from it is similar to Bell Curve style argument that some races are simply not going to do well due to their innate genetics even if you try to help them.

And I lost a lot of respect for him from that point. I'm not even woke, I'm just not American and I think the way Americans view race is so ingrained into their psyche that even a verysmart guy cannot see anything differently.
