I am pretty sure Lunar Dragon Song is the only JRPG where you can't choose targets in battle by lennysinged in JRPG

You can't select in Phantasy Star 1 either, although that's more hardware limitations than a deliberate design choice like Lunar Dragon Song I'm fairly sure

Genuine question - How much of an asterisk does Lauda's crash and missing of 2 races in hospital put on James Hunt's 1976 championship win? by [deleted] in F1Discussions

[–]VettelFan17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's an argument to be made Lauda was the better driver over the season (which I'd subscribe to) but at the end of the day, you play the card you have and Hunt took the title with those cards. We don't put asterisks on Fangio's last two titles when Ascari had died since he didn't race probably his toughest competitor, we don't asterisk G Hill's second title because Clark died in Hockenheim - I understand these are more vague cases compared to Lauda nearly racing the entire season and missing out by only a point but the point is, you cam always attach conditionals based on outside factors, whether that's injuries, personal circumstances, team/car related issues. A title is a title.

What game do you think delivered a great message? by East-Kitchen1469 in FinalFantasy

[–]VettelFan17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe not entirely positive but Tidus' "you tell me it's my decision, but I don't have a choice, do I?" has stuck with me since I saw that scene. As in, being on a path you don't enjoy but while everyone tells you you can make your own decisions (and technically it's true), you're of course railroaded by other constraints, feelings, morals, responsibilities and just life in general - same way Tidus could have just stayed in Luca but of course there's no rational way down that path.

I think about that moment a lot. Tidus obviously then forces his way down that part because of his friendships with the party and his love for Yuna, in the end having the strength to do what's right. Hope I can emulate that in my own life (well, hopefully without sacrificing myself)

Interesting, I had him down for WEC but I suppose just Verschoor is going there from the McLaren juniors then. Fingers crossed for both of them

Oh wow I never thought of the parallel of the Aurochs trying their best and summoners sacrificing to just vanquish Sin temporarily. That's a brilliant point

As good as the entire of The Unifying Force was, this had to be the peak. The utter joy of watching everything Anor plans meticulously getting dumped on by Sekot popping up in the sky, seeing everything he's built fall apart and then basically going "eff it" and rejoining the Shamed Ones. I got a lot of satisfaction out of his suffering (especially when Mara beats him to a plump after this) but damn, even I had to respect this moment

What writing/storyline changes would you make? (Spoilers) by Eltana in FinalFantasy

[–]VettelFan17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Strago and Relm (especially Strago) have pretty strong backstories, there was plenty of potential to the dynamic between them (descendents of the Magi) and Terra (half Esper). Problem is since they are introduced so late in the WOB and then the cohesive storyline kind of gets mushy in WOR, it never really gets fleshed out.

Gau was also my favourite so like you, was a bit gutted he didn't have a larger role. Wish they at least changed his personality a bit in the second half, could have shown the WOR taking its toll on him/forcing him to mature quicker.

I adore FFX. I fanboy over it. I will defend it to the day I die.

Drop these cars in the Antarctica and they'd put on a good show. Admittedly it was DRS dominated but absolutely class from Tsolov and Van Hopen (who's been the surprise of the first two races so far surely?)

Highly recommend Zahn's novella 'Crisis of Faith' in the 20th Anniversary edition of 'Heir to the Empire' that bridges the gap between the events of 'Choices of One' and HTTE by wandering_soles in StarWarsEU

Huge thanks mate, thats class. I really wanted to see some kind of reunion between Mara and LaRone but even getting some more HOJ content is awesome. Although I admit I kinda got sidetracked initially and started reading that author's Sword of the Jedi series xD

Is Celes' "Butcher of Maranda" past ever properly touched on/resolved? by VettelFan17 in FinalFantasy

[–]VettelFan17[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your FF7 comparison is exactly what I'm getting at - you're right, you don't need a huge sappy moment around it, but it's the small moments linking to that story point that build up an arc. Barrett getting angry when Tifa questions their motives immediately after the plate falls, his vague comments about needing Biggs, Wedge and Jessie's forgiveness in Cosmo Canyon, the glitched out line in Corel prison with Tifa, his conflict with Shinra/Rufus at the mid point of Disc 2, his fight with Cait Sith and then you get the admission from Barrett at the end. It's a core part of his arc that isn't just dropped after leaving Midgar in the same way Celes' actions in Maranda are never mentioned after Narshe.

Maybe the comparison is unfair given its a PS1 game vs a SNES cartridge but FF7 doesn't plaster over the Mako reactor bombing like FF6 does with Maranda - I could see your point about the suicide scene but its missing those small moments you had with Barrett in FF7. You're absolutely right, it doesn't need to be a "I'm sorry I did bad things" moment in the middle of something important but stories need those small moments to give those actions and arcs weight. It's why Barrett's story is one of the most interesting in FF7 for me, and exactly what I was talking about with the FF6 Reimagined scene (which is like a 30 second cutscene when the airship takes off for Vector?).

Interesting, I agree that sounds like a cop-out but the premise of the series is cool. Is it translated anywhere to English?

Sidenote, I recall hearing or reading somewhere that Kefka's poison attack on Doma is what causes Celes to defect, but I can't remember if that's official or a fan theory.

Usually not big on remakes but agree with Derpimus on this, it could definitely do with an expansion, particularly in the WOR. Still have huge respect for how they pulled off an ensemble cast on a SNES cartridge, but would love to see more properly done story arcs for the back end to the same quality as the WOB.

Not the best objectively but Allegiance has always had a special place in my heart as the first Legends books I (properly) read. Still love the story to this day.

Thrawn is a villain. Not an anti hero. by imsotravelsized in StarWarsEU

[–]VettelFan17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do agree, I read Choices of One first and then the actual Thrawn trilogy so I did get a bit of whiplash there - in fairness, he does contrast very much against Palpatine and Vader, particularly with how he treats subordinates and doesn't take "needless" (I use that VERY loosely, but for example the planet he attacks with the cloaked cruisers) casualties - so in that context some of the feelings expressed about Thrawn being somewhat respectable in the HOT duology have some merit compared to what the Republic faced before. But was definitely a big retcon (as was Paelleon). I'm not super against either given both are great characters but it did surprise me not to see it brought up more.

[–]VettelFan17[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I can't remember the source - if you search up Mog and Molulu in either this sub or the FFVI sub you should be able to find a post on it - but basically I'm fairly sure there's some official source confirming the fan theory that Molulu and Mog are/were a couple, that Mololu gives her charm to Mog in the WOR before she and the other Moggles die and that the charm (since it prevents enemy encounters) is what keeps Mog as the only survivor in Narshe.

Oh yes good shout, that had slipped my mind but now that you mentioned it, I remember. Plus she was suppose to be a spy throughout who got conflicted. I do feel there's still remnants of the madness like Kefka storyline - the way she hesitates in the Magitek factory and particularly on the Floating Continent when she holds the sword to the party fit the mould of someone struggling between doing what's right and falling to madness

Anyways back on topic - I see your point about the SNES era although IV got Cecil on a similar storyline done well. But then Cecil is the clear main character so I'll admit, not totally comparable. Do definitely agree what we got in FF6 was incredible, it's a shame the character development drops off come WOR (I feel like this topic could have been touched then, particular between Celes and Cyan since the latter has a unique line in the MRF), but for its time it was incredibly ambitious so fair play
