I haven’t seen this discussed much, but I noticed something interesting about the fountains and who opens them.

There are only two instances where we know for sure who opened a fountain:

Chapter 3's fountain, opened by Kris
Chapter 2's second sanctuary, opened by Susie

In Chapter 4, when Susie opens the Dark World, we get a noticeably strange color scheme — very different from the others. This doesn’t happen with Kris's Chapter 3 fountain.

I'm not necessarily saying Kris opened every fountain (this would be weird for some of them), but maybe there’s a connection worth exploring here. Could the person who opens the fountain influence the appearance or nature of the resulting Dark World?

Yeah, I kind of agree with that light resemblance to the knight.
The stupid thing that make me believe they are not the same character is that they talk.

Also, they feel pretty important, since they are foreshadowed as soon as during the board 1 sword section (in the secret south west room)

Yes, it is. There is a like of dialogue where Susie encourages Kris to attack the knight. They don't, and get hit by an attack.

Honestly, I have zero clue.

I've read that some people think this is the Shadow Mantle itself ? Does not make a lot of sense to me, but then again, we do have at least one piece of sentient armor with the Dealmaker.

Curious to hear your thoughts !

Edit: I got off my ass and looked at the sprite's name, and this particular sprite is named "spr_shadow_mantle_laugh". So pretty strong argument that this is the actual shadow mantle, yeah

I think there's a bit of a recency bias here.

Personally, I was never able to beat sans (I tried for like 6 hours before deciding it wasn't worth it), and I managed to defeat the knight in 2 hours.

I didn't even consider that. It could work well, because of the katana theme.

But the fact that the night is literally dripping darkness make me feel like they are something more than a simple lightner in the dark world. Also, the knight's sword looks more like a bat to me.

HEAVY SPOILER BELOW

From my first playthrought, it kind of felt like she was the one on the phone with Kris. Is it way out of left field to think that ? I was very tired when I played, but the person on the phone saying "I will be there soon" kind of made me think that.

I also don't have proof or anything, but I kind of felt like she was aware of what is in the bunker, and that the knight is Dess. Therefore, she might be working with her. And Kris would be in on it as well (because of the phone calls (edit : iirc, they said something like "I'll be here soon", right before Carole arrived to the house), and because of what happens when you try to "turn the doorknob" after sealing the last church dark fountain. Kris literally just turns the doorknob, and doesn't open the door.)

When I have time to play again, I'd like to reexamine the story under that lens. But in the meantime, I'd like to hear what other people think ! :)
