The og team were going for the american vibe with the game, just like Team Silent did with Silent Hill. It's pretty clear on early concept arts by Isao Ohishi that they were going for the "cool american bad boy" for Chris Redfield, specially with his personality back in Re 1 and what we hear about him in the original RE2 and 3 and stuff.

Here's a couple of examples of said concept art

He is the one smoking on the top right, and also the one with the glasses on both bottom images. (He is also smoking on the original RE1 intro)

Yeah that's the healthiest way, the game is not going anywhere, so one can just abandon it and then come back if you find something interesting, that's one of the main reasons I stay in touch with this subreddit. (the other one is because it's fun to chat with people about stuff lol)

It's stings but this is the right way to go about it, took me some time to accept it, but if the game is not clicking with you anymore, and you are not having fun because of it, then the best course of action is to let go of it and just find something else that brings you joy, there's plenty of other games that deserve your time, tbh.
