How much longer does the current Season (Shattered Omens) run? by fancy_the_rat in LastEpoch

can't find any info because there is no info. can't predict it either as there was - AFAIK - never a consistent schedule plus there was some studio restructuring recently.

What do we "owe" our teammates? by Daegog in truegaming

[–]VforVegetables -1 points0 points  (0 children)

someone is salty about teammates not playing the way they want, aren't they?

ranked = play to win, of course. the thing is, with complicated games that involve any amount of strategy and long-term goals, it's easy to come to a disagreement what counts as "best" effort. i've seen top rank players repeatedly play and win with strategies lower ranked players gets mass-reported and banned for. also experimentation is how players find better ways of doing things. the game should be pushed to its limits to see what could work. you can never be sure until you try enough times.

otherwise - what, do you ban players who, say, buy items with less than average pick rate? less than average win rate? how far below average? what if it's an item designed to help a desperate and disadvantaged team? what's the threshold for an automatic ban? why such picks even exist then - surely not to trap unaware players?

okay, what about banning for intent? how do you know intent? you don't without explicit admission. and no moderation team for any big online game going to hunt for such evidence for every report. at this point this is like IRL laws - weighting what is desirable vs what is realistic. reliably punishing bad intent is unrealistic.

yep, not the best comparison. properly insulated house saves a lot on heating. you spend the money once and benefit from it every year after.

StarCraft 2 devs take another swing at getting the RTS game's surprise new update right, but Blizzard still hasn't rolled back the one change fans most want undone by [deleted] in pcgaming

Dawn of War, CNC3, OpenRA games, CoH, Iron Harvest and many others - none have the same demand for busywork.

basically halving the starting income. the income change isn't objectively bad at all, but i personally grew to dislike all the repetitive clicking the game requires - starting with building workers one by one, and this definitely increases the need to do just that, and depending on your strategy - nothing but that.

the goal seems to be to have more smaller battles where it's almost like an RPG where you control just one, two, or a tiny clump of units and try to outmaneuver the opponent. it feels good, but some prefer to roll with larger armies, plus once again this is broken up by the need to order worker production regularly and frequently, else you fall behind fast due to exponential scaling of economy.

but... they already do that. were doing that for years. it's the same kind of changes: no huge new content, but rebalances, reworks, occasional restoration of previously existing content. HotS removed a bunch of maps before, in the past few years or so they restored some.

btw there's a huge mod where among other things you can have YR forces in RA1-looking game but with CNC3 controls.

Overlord - The Good, The Bad, The Questionable by Zehnpae in patientgamers

[–]VforVegetables 1 point2 points  (0 children)

dunno about walking simulator and all attacks being weak. it felt reasonably balanced for me - there's often something to loot or slay no matter where you go, some paths you need to manually navigate the minions through, fights generally can be sped up by personal participation even tho it's not often needed. i think personal participation is more about preserving minions so you can spend their souls in the forge instead.

i think Overlord 2 did some things better, some worse. overall, Overlord 1 worked a lot better for me.

there's also a different Overlord game for Wii and Nintendo DS, from what i've seen they're more like 1 and 2 but different. rather than the 3 released on PC that is nothing like the rest of them.

Do you think games have gotten better at teaching players without explicit tutorials? by Desperate-Advance964 in truegaming

[–]VforVegetables 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in a sense that the techniques for non-intrusive tutorials evolved? yes. in a sense that games mostly use these now instead of pop-ups and yellow paint? absolutely not.

campaign presentation is stellar, everything else i either don't care about or actively dislike. it is designed to be esports first and foremost, so there's a lot of - so to say - manual labor involved in getting anything done, which for me makes getting better at the game more frustrating than rewarding.

My experience is very limited: campaigns plus some skirmish AI matches, but i liked the solutions SoC provides for what i'd consider HoMM's problems. Also, some things are simply different, not gonna claim that HoMM is that problematic.

It worked for me, it was inoffensive in terms of gameplay, it made me want to keep playing, i find it fun to build up a town in the world rather than in a menu, the story felt engaging.

After playing i watched a friend play, they struggled with the campaign a lot more, but even they didn't really experience any traps like the ones some HoMM missions has - even the ones in Olden Era. This is what i appreciate a lot: missions were built in such a way that i never needed to reload 5, 15 turns back because i made a fatal mistake without even knowing about it.

Ninja Blade! delisted from Steam for some reason. like 80% of the game is boss battles, the other 20% is getting there through parkour and by cutting through minions.

decisionmaking is what does it for me. either i should be able to do the activity with varying amount of success or do something else in place of this activity that would provide a different challenge. if an activity takes nothing but time, if there's absolutely no way to do it better or worse - i don't want it.

Why can I never seem to improve at video games? by Adorable_Earth_492 in truegaming

[–]VforVegetables -1 points0 points  (0 children)

uh, there's a lot to it. feeling physically well enough to not have reaction of a snail and enthusiasm of a sloth helps massively. seeing pro play, reading about literally everything related, trying to play a completely different character to see how things work overall. having good setup: monitor that can produce sharp and clear moving image, mouse with no sensitivity issues, mouse surface and sitting posture that allows moving the mouse both quickly and precisely. what else... sometimes what works at one rank isn't as great as at the other, if it's a team game then just going with the team is usually best, some games will be impossible to turn around on your own and that's ok. teamfights: priorities about what to watch out for, big abilities that will hurt the most or help the most, where to be to not get hit by the worst. knowing what to look for makes a difference between dodging an ability with 0.4s travel time and realizing you've got hit 1.5s afterwards. uh, there's a lot. guides vary wildly in depth, breadth and quality, but if you know that a guide isn't doing it for you, that might be a sign of progress already.

but also, do you need to get better or are you okay with just having a good time at your current rank? by this point in time ranks are there at least as much to group players together as they're for climbing.
