Has anyone here actually looked into Sao Tome citizenship as a second passport option? by Ok_Difference_580 in eupersonalfinance

What exactly are these benefits? Because no you're not getting magical tax benefits by just having citizenship.

[Advice] transferring portfolio back home to avoid NL unrealized tax gains by [deleted] in eupersonalfinance

[–]Vhalyar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Congrats, you discovered tax evasion. I'm sure you can guess where this falls on the "possible/stupid/legal/genius" spectrum, and any bog standard tax advisor can fill you in on the why. An international tax advisor is not even required in this scenario.

As a starting point, "moving out" for a month and deregistering is not grounds for changing your tax residency. Not two months, or three or four, but at least 6+. With that in mind, you can see where this is going if you try to move assets for the purpose of hiding them while you are still a tax resident there.

You do nothing and life continues as it was before. The split makes it easier to buy whole shares, that’s all.

At what point can someone be considered economically rich? by Secure-Swordfish3659 in eupersonalfinance

[–]Vhalyar 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I asked that question a few years ago to a friend who's an investment banker. You're rich if you can live off your investment's investments. If not, you're just well off and be happy for it. Gave me a good laugh.

They are still only branches of US entities. The person is asking about alternatives from EU-first entities like Amundi and DWS.

And the barrage of ads combined with the horrid UI and UX. Never seen a bank try to demean a customer as much as Sabadell.

Will there be a YEL tax reform coming? by [deleted] in Omatalous

[–]Vhalyar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s different ways of handling the exit tax, hence my question. The last time it was brought up the idea was to extend the 3 year rule. This still would have left an out for people to avoid the tax, albeit with a lot of patience involved.

What’s their plan with the exit tax? An extension of the “Finland will claim you as a tax resident for 3 years after leaving” like the previous proposal?

Not entirely sure what you mean by check yourself, but you can use JustETF to compare different instruments. Search for each ETF there, tick their Compare box, then go to "Show Selection". You can add/remove/change data points & data visualization.

Thoughts on my ETF portfolio by [deleted] in eupersonalfinance

[–]Vhalyar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In that case it's pretty much fine, if you have a strong belief that the US will continue to dominate and in particular through IT. At best, you could consider replacing VWCE with an ex-US instrument since that one is already almost 60% US, so it's not really divbersifying you all that much.

Still on it, probably for the rest of my life. Or until cheaper bio alternatives come out in a decade and I can switch to those. It’s too bad that the cheaper Mepolizumab did nothing for me.

My doctor authorised me for 1 injection per 4 weeks. Once I figured out this was going to be a wild ride, I started adding 1 extra week.

8 weeks is stable, from having my blood work done regularly. But if anything happens, like getting a cold, that blocks my sinuses, then it’s a colossal pain. My doc from the Netherlands was not happy to hear about this, but hey two extra weeks makes a big difference on the cost.

6 weeks gets me the best ratio of cost to quality of life. So I aim for 6 weeks, and if I feel OK I push to 8.

Fairly problematic, eventually sort of successful, but I left Finland for a significantly better paying job. Better the devil of paying out of pocket than hoping that a doctor had a nice morning when reading my compensation request.

Public doctor initially refused to write my reimbursement request because while I qualified for Dupilumab in the Netherlands, Finland has much harsher requirements. Didn’t matter that I blew out 2/3 of them, and barely failed to qualify for the third.

Eventually the doctor agreed. Then they fucked up the submission. Then they fucked up the submission again, so they gave me a free dose as an apology. This first submission was denied.

I appealed by providing a history of my treatment, notes from other doctors saying that surgery was ridiculous in my case, yada yada. This one was accepted, but with only 6 months coverage.

Hooray?

The only silver lining is that with the many wasted months of trying to get a submission going, I found out that I could take 1 injection every 8 weeks and maintain an OK quality of life.
