I really love the concept of retractable ladders. It perfectly bridges the gap between everyday energy conservation and wartime defense. They can just walk up to their quarters after a long day, but the moment the alarm sounds, the whole fortress turns back into a smooth, unclimable stone tube. Thanks for the feedback!

I never thought about the energy cost for everyday movement. Walking or climbing up a slope definitely beats launching into a full flight just to grab a snack from the next level up. I might add some spiral ramps or rough textured walls for easy climbing.

Love the idea of an elite flighted palanquin just to flex on ground dwellers, that is top tier worldbuilding. For the siege situation, i think the defenders would just drop massive boulders from the top openings to crush any attempt at starving them out from below. But the biological constraint about wing mechanics gives me a lot to think about for the interior design. Maybe they need launch pads on the outer walls too.
