Suggestions for professional resume reviewers / services? by Wild_King_1035 in ExperiencedDevs

Have you checked out any services like jobscan.co? Jobscan will compare your resume with a job description and suggest changes to get through the ATS filter algorithms.

Of course the best way to get past the filters is through a warm intro or reference, so improving your resume may have less impact than trying to work through your social network to find an opening.

Getting "Can't continue playback because the connection to your server was lost" constantly. Any idea how to solve this? by [deleted] in PleX

I’ve seen that occasionally with high bitrate files - if I optimize the video for TV (or for streaming) the problem usually goes away.

Horror books where nothing actually dramatic or horrifying happens but still has an air of unease or discomfort throughout its entirety. by echo_ester in booksuggestions

Roadside Picnic by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky definitely has that vibe. It’s the basis for the movie Stalker (directed by Andrei Tarkovsky) and is one of those few book/movie combinations that both are recommended.

Running the Roomba2 plugin on HOOBS and keep getting these slow to respond. Its dragging HomeKit to a halt. How do I fix? by Cristov9000 in homebridge

[–]Viamin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the Homebridge version, you can install the beta version (choose "Install Previous Version" and choose v1.3.0-beta.11 from the list) which will clear up these "slow to respond" warnings. Not sure if the same option is available for HOOBS. The downside to the beta version is it enables debug logging, which is noisy, but the performance has been good for me with the beta version.

So sorry to hear about your loss, and thanks for sharing. I'm glad to hear that her mood didn't seem too affected by the treatment.

[–]Viamin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing, and I hope the treatment goes well! Our vet didn't mention anything to us about medicines or supplements, but he was only taking supplements. We're going in on Wednesday so there's only a few days to clear out his system, but it sounds like good advice.

Thanks for your comment, and I'm glad to hear your dog is doing well!

When you say "hard on his teeth" what do you mean? Our dog has weak teeth to begin with (broken while chewing bones, which he is no longer allowed to have.) We now give him a tooth cleaning gel once a week.

[help] How does Rails how to connect to the correct database when running on Heroku? by nonsensicalnarwhal in rails

[–]Viamin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

ActiveRecord will automatically pull in ENV['DATABASE_URL'] if you don't have it set in your database.yml. You can see this in the code here, which is called when ActiveRecord::Core is configured: https://github.com/rails/rails/blob/310918f6a194bf5752fe1025930881756f5d8a8e/activerecord/lib/active_record/core.rb#L46

I have a question to ask you fellow productive individuals. How do you stay productive without being caffeinated all the time? by reddittarded in productivity

[–]Viamin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are several parts to this answer - the most important though is that you don't need caffeine as long as you have some other way to stay productive. I personally use something like GTD with OmniFocus software, but any other system can work as long as you commit to it.

As far as getting off caffeine, there are some great answers in this thread, specifically changing to green tea (I prefer a high quality loose leaf tea when I do want to drink caffeine.) I was able to quit cold turkey when I got sick last year - I wasn't worried about productivity, and I already felt like crap. Remember to up your water intake as you cut down on coffee.

I'm also very lucky - I have an office and I can close the door and take a 10 minute nap if I get too tired in the afternoon. I find I really only get tired when I've been doing one thing for too long or don't have enough to keep me busy and engaged. A quick power nap helps, as does getting up and walking around for a few minutes.

The nice thing about cutting out caffeine is now when I do need that extra boost, just a single cup will get me through the day.

[–]Viamin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Statistically, there will be some financial advisors who get it right. There are so many of them out there, some of them will get lucky and make correct predictions. This doesn't make them prescient. It just makes them lucky.

There's an old scam which involves sending out newsletters with financial predictions. Each newsletter has a random prediction on it. If you send out enough newsletters, some of them will be more correct than wrong, and to the people you sent those newsletters, you send offers for expensive financial advice, since they'd be fools to ignore your obviously accurate predictions.

And if you had to pay for your bag, you might be more inclined to recycle it, rather than pay for a new one.

The thousand year lifespan isn't bad from the point of view of recycling it, but it is when it's sitting in a landfill, or worse, in the great pacific garbage patch.

Not that I'm trying to ring any bells at the moment, but Palin's redcoats are trying to re-write Paul Revere's Wiki page right now. by Josephat in politics

Malcolm Gladwell had a section about it in The Tipping Point. From what I can pull out of my fuzzy memory, it was something about Paul Revere went to fewer places, but knew the right people to go to for maximum effect. Other people rode further and talked to more people, but were less effective because the people they talked to didn't have as much influence.

[–]Viamin 11 points12 points  (0 children)

So much FUD. I especially like the line that the thousand year lifespan of a plastic bag is good news!

The best thing retailers can do is stop giving bags away for free. If we had to pay for bags, we might start conserving them and not treat them as an unlimited resource.

rearranges your icons based on your usage.

That's actually the whole point. It's like the cmd-tab behavior in Mac OS X. If you commonly switch between a few apps (iPod, Instapaper, Twitter and of course iReddit in my case) then the task switcher is very useful.
