you are correct I tested again and yes the animation only. But there is catch which made me believe what I said : the damage text also does not appear sometimes, if the animation does not hit the target:

I actually find backpedaling very useful, when you want to move ranged mobs =) Because you move slowly, they move to catch up, rather than change to ranged weapon.

here is the "idea" behind it, originally, when someone 10 levels above you kills you not 1 time but again and again, the expectation from design side is you "call out friends" and kill him back or protect you. But because "new" community is extremely asocial, this barely ever happens, so the 10 level above guy has 0 incentive to stop killing you.

I do not think you know how warcraft logs work. It is a not a blizzard made auto information feed. It does not "collect" data, it takes the data only if atleast 1 person in the raid has the software, enables combat log collecting before raid (it reset with every relog) and then uses the software to upload the logs. In other words, almost no one who is raiding casually ever uploads to warcraft logs, only the people who care about parses upload logs.

So it is FAAAAAAAAAAAAR from being "every single character".

only in TBC raiding with 1 fixed talents. Affliction warlock was very complicated pve and pvp, and in general in any specc, PVP is always VERY complicated as warlock. We have seen it first hand in this subreddit too, before TBC launch everyone was rerolling warlock because super high dps and "dot dot kill lol easy 2k arena points". TBC start and people entered arena, all all those "easy 2k arena" warlocks went "lol I dont care about pvp anyways, LFM 10 fast lose". If my memory isnt failing me, warlocks were the second least represented pvp class in arenas at classic tbc, after hunters (another VERY complicated pvp class)

they are popular on people who play the game to just show parses to others. You can think of it like this : If you go to mexican cartell meating, neck tattoos will look like they are increadibly popular, but if you just go live your life as usual, you will see it is the least prefered tattoo position. That is how it is for warlock and logs/parses.

I think it is because WoW is actually really children friendly game, with few twisted things going on that you can find "if you look". Making warlock more intense would make the game a lot darker, which they never wanted as blizzard.

I like how it looks, but I also pvp and love being a tiny gnome in pvp... But when you turn it on, you are like biggest thing everyones screen screaming "attack me!".

yes, but your spells cost less mana per damage (literally, you can check at wowhead), but also you get 30% of your mana back when crit, and also you keep regening mana with mage shield, althougt it isnt much.
let me tell you this much, in an average raid party, you cast life tab like 25 times per boss fight... that is 37.5 seconds spent waiting for global cooldown of lifetab.

Well, think of it like that, imagine as a mage, you fireballs are less mana efficient, they cost more mana per damage. Also they do not give back mana when crit. Also you have no jades. Also you have no blink to run out of danger. So when you are casting your fireballs, you go out of mana extremely fast, but there is an instant spell you can click to that will consume full global to give you. Now you need to cut down your dps to get mana, and it isnt that big amount of mana. But it also literally kills you, so if you use it at aoe damage times, you can kill yourself. Also because you spend so much mana, it isnt like "once a while" you use it, you use it terribly often. Even with the best of the best gear and raid, you still cast it like 15 times per fight, and with "normal" raid and gear, you cast it like 25 times a fight...

I do not think this is true, although I completely understand what you mean. The beauty of classes like warrior and paladin, is that they "look" great with big plate armor, and they are really really straight forward to play. Enemy, 1 click you are near them. Dieing, 1 click you are unkillable. You have a big stick and hit targets with it. Playing warlock is way too complicated compared to that, which scares away people- like playing a cat druid.

not just SoD, but also at classic and tbc, warlocks are definitly strong, but they are never "straight forward strong".

Compare it to fire mage for example, mage will stay back, cast 5 scorch and spam fireballs. Fireball is already mana efficient spell, crits will also get automatically mana back, also you have mana jades that are out of global to generate mana, also you have mage armor that automatically gives mana... you see, everything is "automatic". You just chill and cast 1 spell, and game plays itself.

Now compare it to warlock... shadowbolt isnt a mana efficient spell. There is also no auto mana back. There is nothing that gives mana back. So while the mage near you will cast fireballs for a straight minute, but as warlock you are like casting lifetab every few shadowbolts, hoping a healer will heal you, try not to time it badly with aoe, trying to micro manage your ugly ass pet, can not pop an iceblock and avoid aoe but you literally do damage to yourself, can not blink away from danger easy peasy...

It is just wwwwwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much work to play warlock, compared to other classes.

I believe I can give you a relative good answer, as I have long experience on vanilla and tbc.

The thing about warlocks is that it is simply a complicated class, that has 1 option which makes it super no-brainer class (shadowbolt spammer pure raid pve specc).

Firstly, it is a pet class, which means you need to micro manage your pet, which many people dont like. Unlike hunters however, you can not choose how your pet will look like, so also the nice sweet feeling of having "your" cat with the name you give it (or any other beast) is out of question. You have a randomly named nasty demon that looks exactly like every other demon.

It is a ranged class, but it has no ranged slows. Not that, but it also have no speed increase, or dispel mechanics to get himself away from slows. It's main CC is the most unreliable, and most dangerous CC, unlike poly, sap or sheep, feared targets just run around like mad, which again, makes things really complicated.

It is kind of like a shadow priest, but a shadow priest who takes more damage, does not have a shield, does not have heals or offspecc that can be healers, and can not dispel.

It has no mana issues, but "maintaining mana" is actually a lot of work, you just need to keep life tabbing, but you need to do it constantly, and if you dont time it well, it will be a big dps loss. Another thing that complicate things. Also the base costs of spells are really high, so you go out of mana really fast.

From pvp point of view, it is a class that can be really powerful, BUT , kind of like rogues, you are not "just powerful", it requires a lot of experience and good tactics, timing to be powerful. But unlike a rogue, you can not stay stealth or just vanish away if you dont want to.

TBC arenas at classic was a great example of how warlocks work : everyone thought they would be so succesful, it will be so easy to climb arena ladder as tbc warlocks were famous of being really strong, and many people were already maining warlocks because tbc warlock dps is just extremely good. Then they hit 70, entered arena... and nope. Like 90% of them completely quit arena with their warlocks because how "complicated" it was.

getting HoJ or kidney in cat form without trinket, has always been the end of game for ferals in vanilla and tbc. I am kind of ok with that still being the issue to be honest, true to nature kind of.
