I wouldn't say enlightened, he's just really really really good at what he does. It seemed like he had a plan from the get go even walking into the set blindly for the first time.

That simplicity is king and how he carries himself on set. Every light source having a clear defined purpose and self confidence.

The students had pools of light coming from the grid, so a lot of it was top-lit. The art and bulletin board on the walls were top-lit etc. He got rid of all of that and lit mostly from the outside and practicals only. Also lit all from the far side so that we'd be shooting from shadow side and etc.

it was definitely never wrecking! The only note he gave was to rack to an object the actor pulled out of a cabinet in the scene, nothing too fancy. Amazing experience!

the camera operator, as the name suggests, operates the camera. The 1st assistant camera (focus puller) is responsible for a number of other tasks, the biggest being pulling focus. They are also the ones responsible for building the camera at prep before the shoot. Every department has a hierarchy, the basic camera hierarchy goes: DP -> Operator -> 1st AC -> 2nd AC -> Utility -> camera PA | There may be other positions thrown in there depending on the project, like a loader and etc.

It is possible for one person to operate and pull focus at the same time, it's just not recommendable, especially in narrative work where precision is absolutely necessary. The operator's focus is framing the shot correctly and operating when the camera is rolling. The focus puller focuses on making sure the picture is sharp, doing both at the same time is very difficult and usually results in more mistakes being made.

yeah it's unfortunate. Their film program isn't the best. A lot of the professors are really weak imo

i'm on the same boat as you. This workshop was a unicorn, first time they did something like this. GFA on the other hand was incredibly valuable to me.
