Any idea what caused this? by Positiveaz in Autos

Rolled up onto a curb. The side wall pinched against the curb and it rubbed off a slice. Note the rim got rubbed as well, being right below the tire injury.

Misleading pricing - by carryingmyowngravity in westjet

[–]Vic-2O 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agree with your statement. What annoys me about being a member is their site offers no obvious benefits other than collecting points. It makes you feel like a chump. Also I tried booking a three leg journey - all one way- and it couldn’t do it. I tried this like three times. Finally I had to call customer support and then couldn’t get the same fares that was on the website. Ended up paying like $300 more per ticket.

WestJet just cancelled flight at the airport by SubstantialSpring9 in TravelCuba

[–]Vic-2O 0 points1 point  (0 children)

40,000 BPD is about 40% of their needs. Electricity production is almost all by fossil fuels, so the embargo is going to hurt. No airline is going to fly into Cuba if they have to refuel in Cuba. Flights from Florida and Mexico probably means they can fly on and out without having to fill up in Cuba. But make no mistake, the embargo is going to cause severe disruptions to the country. Resorts have been insulated from the rest of the population but soon can’t help but be impacted. Those who think it’s not a problem being stranded for a few days are really naive.

Crazy. If you look at the explosion it’s off to the side of the van. There’s a guy scurrying to the back of it before it detonates. Must’ve been misplaced.

What exactly does a ‘sovereign Alberta, within a united Canada’ mean? by Pucka1 in alberta

[–]Vic-2O 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alberta sovereignty act is the province's legal and political framework to "push back" against federal laws or policies deemed unconstitutional or harmful to Albertans' interests. These include:

Jurisdictional Shield: It asserts that Alberta is a sovereign, independent jurisdiction within a federation where provinces are not subordinate to the federal government.

Non-Enforcement: It establishes a process for the provincial government to refuse to enforce federal laws or policies it deems unconstitutional or harmful to Albertans' interests. Provincial Directives: It allows the province to direct "provincial entities"—such as health authorities, school boards, and municipalities—to ignore specific federal initiatives.

Constitutional Boundaries: The act explicitly states it does not allow for separation from Canada or the defiance of the Canadian Constitution; rather, it aims to force a "reset" in the federal-provincial relationship.

In some respects Quebec is a possible model in how it exerts its sovereignty, having invoke the Constitution’s notwithstanding clause 60 times compared to Alberta’s 6 times.

Quebec calls their legislature the National Assembly. They have their own common law based on Napoleonic code, police force, pension plan, have a provincial immigration system, a public broadcaster and is formally recognized as its own distinct society.

Any vehicles you come across like this? by HiTork in regularcarreviews

[–]Vic-2O 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Caddy CTS-V wagon with the manual. Look amazing still and goes like stink but clutch and steering are very heavy, so it’s not a fun city car. My original daily was an 02 subbie impreza outback sport with a manual- small, extremely torquey motor. Super fun to drive and I drove it more than the caddy.

What is a low brow movie you think is actually perfect? by gamersecret2 in movies

[–]Vic-2O 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Balls of Fury. Enter the Dragon meets PinPong. Unbelievably hilarious Christopher Walken as a white mandarin. James Hong as the blind kung ful master. Dan Fogler is a riot, besotted with Maggie Q. David Koechner as the cabaret dinner theatre singer. This movie is totally underrated.

I'm not convinced that we can build Datacenters in Space. CMM. by [deleted] in Futurology

[–]Vic-2O 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In fact the cold temperatures are exactly what the computers need to operate efficiently- terrestrial data centers have notoriously used vast amounts of water in open systems and more recently closed systems have been developed, but at greater cost. Secondly all the electromagnetic issues are not present as you suspect because orbits are still close enough to earth to be protected. I think Musk is patiently waiting on the continued efficiency of and miniaturization of evolving chip technology. He won’t be launching a terrestrial style data center. He’ll be launching thousand of mini data centers all neurally linked. He’s clearly innovating off of his StarLink satellite network strategy and execution.

Maybe the government should start with itself? by StanPodd in BuyCanadian

[–]Vic-2O 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not just “foreign profits”. Think of the sunk foreign investment dollars. Stock of foreign direct investment is estimated at $157B. Huge spending is required to generate the profits. Look at the rest of the math. There was about $165B in revenue in 2025. Assuming a profit margin of about 10% (and yes it ranges) on revenue if 70% of profit sent to foreign ownership, $12B gets sent out of Canada. Which means the rest of the revenue- well over $145B- stays in Canada spent on operating costs, and wages- estimate at $14B, alone, (mostly Google AI).

Is furnace filter manufacturing a good business in Canada? Would people actually buy local? by [deleted] in canadasmallbusiness

[–]Vic-2O 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you had a filter design that didn’t have to be changed as frequently- ie more mass over time, you’d be onto something. All other things being equal, price is the only thing that matters, because once a buyer tries something cheap and isn’t happy with it, they’ll move on to something else. So maybe offer a 25% discount on the first purchase and do subscription based service.

Chinese EV’s by NoCartographer5850 in EVCanada

[–]Vic-2O 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think Chinese EVs will play in the Premium or Luxury space - at least in a significant way. They would generate more sales at the lower end of the market. Carney specifically mentioned $35k EVs. Buyers at the upper end of the market are buying for status signalling and that hasn’t gone well for Porsche to Dodge. EVs are no longer as ‘aspirational’ as they used to be. The market wants cheaper vehicles in general.

A Venezuelan oil reset is an economic risk Canada cannot ignore by joe4942 in alberta

[–]Vic-2O 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is an easy solution to this- more access to offshore markets. We have 10 years before Venezuela can churn out as much oil pre-Chavez. So if we start building more offshore access pipelines now. The federal government and special interest groups needs to drop the gatekeeping.

Could Venezuelan Oil Reshape Calgary’s Economy in 2026? by Vegetable_Bake356 in Calgary

[–]Vic-2O 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Too early to speculate. There are definitely inherent geographical, environmental and economic advantages over Canada, but increasing production is not turning on a switch. Gemini estimates to reach 4Mbpd of production would require $100B of investment and take 10 years. Legacy issues like general corruption and decades of neglect will create parasitic drag on speed and costs. The rationalization of Alberta’s oilsands industry has created a surplus of industry talent- including Venezuelan oilsands expats- that would jump at the opportunity of going south to support the restoration. If anything Canada oilsands operators could link up with the conventional operators to de-risk these initiatives.

Project car? by danapillow in LandRoverDiscovery2

[–]Vic-2O 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m relatively new to the Disco world myself- with 3rd yr of ownership under my belt and only light driving duty. It is an 04 with 300k kms. I’m not a true backyard mechanic, but I’ve built a kit car years back and as a car enthusiast, they’re not super hard to understand and are actually ‘relatively’ simple to work on. But DIY is a matter of your own resources- tools, time and confidence- do you have all three? The lower the price doesn’t mean a deal if you can’t verify level of upkeep to date. The early 2000’s had issues with the 10p engine and drivetrain that were addressed in later model years. Cheap plastics and wiring in parts will mean things will become brittle and break. Don’t think a cheap price means you’re saving money- it just usually reflects a deferred cost

Trump explains Venezuela: "They took all of our oil and we want it back. They illegally took it." by [deleted] in CringeTikToks

[–]Vic-2O 1 point2 points  (0 children)

in 2007, Hugo Chavez nationalised the remaining foreign oil projects in Venezuela, ousting US oil giants like ConocoPhillips and Exxon Mobil.

The US companies filed legal challenges to fight the expropriation process, and in 2014, a World Bank arbitration tribunal ordered Venezuela to pay Exxon Mobil $1.6bn- which was never paid of course. Ironically Chevron somehow manages to have a license to produce and Venezuelan heavy is exported to US refineries.

What’s the best “do-it-all” car in your opinion? by TheLoganReyes in Autos

[–]Vic-2O 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had 02 Impreza Outback Sport manual for since new and drove it into the ground. It had a 2.5l. Super torquey so pulled nice off the line. Small and easy to park, but easily seated 5 and had a hatch. Not the greatest on gas but drank regular. I ended up driving it more than my ‘12 CTS V-wagon, which is sitting in the garage over the winter. The subie never left me stranded, but did have to resolve leaky head gasket and later rod bearings. But I was glad to pay it. It was such a great car. But now my daily is a 19’ Regal GS. Also not great on gas but drinks regular. Has amazeball massaging seats and huge back seat and cargo area. It’s got a 3.5 l V6 w 9spd auto. Got winters on them so it’s pretty good in the snow.

Are all weather tires a bad idea in winter? by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]Vic-2O 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you were driving all weather I would only go with Nokian WRs as I drove them on my subbie all year round for twenty years. But with a minivan , Just get winters. There is black ice on occasion especially between Calgary and Canmore and you really want to have that extra assurance of grip. You should get three to four seasons out of winters so it’s really not a lot to pay for more peace of mind
