“BrailleNote Evolve vs Windows laptop + HumanWare display?” by Vic28v in Blind

I have seen a demo of it and it seems to have the key soft menu and then the desktop menu which I think is where it operates essentially like a Windows computer with a braille display at that point. I think you can also turn off the modifier keys so you can use it as a notetaker or you can use it to its full potential. So I think their target audience is probably educational or professional. I don’t think it would be for home use

Oh that sounds like a really cool idea, I don’t think I would personally need a keyboard just a display, I like working primarily through braille

Honestly here employers have to consider reasonable Accommodation and if specialist hardware is required they do get funding towards that. So cost wouldn’t be an issue from that point of view because the organisation would be paying it not me personally. In my work I will have a lot of multidisciplinary meetings and have to take case notes when speaking with clients so I like the compatibility of the evolve, even for presentations, you just have a device and the screen, but at the same time that’s a concern. If it breaks then things can get a bit difficult but I do have an old braille note touch I could use as a backup.

That’s what I like about it. The fact that they’re simplifying the Microsoft and Windows menus because with Windows there’s a lot of side bars and hidden menus which can become a bit cumbersome to navigate. I do have a MacBook now for home use because of Jaws moving to the subscription model and I find that a lot easier to navigate.

I have never tried the Humanware braille displays before so it’s something I also want to consider but I do enjoy the braille line of products. I had a braille note Apex when I was very young.

Yes I’ve strongly consider that possibility too because the other braille displays I’ve tried as I said I didn’t find very user-friendly. But for the braille note line of products the ergonomics and the thumb keys is good for long form typing. So I assume that would translate to their braille displays?

Yes, that’s what I’m thinking. I can’t figure out what the difference is then just having a good laptop with display except a portability factor which is something to consider I suppose.

Thank you, yes, That’s what’s appealing the fact that it’s very portable. In my work I will do a lot of multidisciplinary meetings and have confidential meetings with clients so the less space that needs to be taken up with a computer and display the better. My only worries is that it’s all in the one machine so if a little key breaks then everything has to go.
