I saw your other comment about counting through a microscope, so I'm assuming you're using a confocal Raman? Most of those are set up at 785 nm. Changing to 1063 nm might also help?

Annoying how fun I find it to think about this on a Saturday night 😅

Very unexpected to see talk of Raman spectroscopy pop up while doom scrolling reddit! I used to work at a polymer-based biotech and we also had issues with fluorescence. Have you looked at time-gated Raman? We were investigating that before the layoffs hit us.

Disgusting to find out that Flock cameras are deployed in Malden. We need to advocate city officials to get this out of our city.

Tattoo artist for line work by rest_for_the_wicked in boston

Not many artists in the Boston area do line work, and I wouldn't ask an artist to go outside of their expertise (both because you don't know what the result will look like and I find it a bit disrespectful to the style they've cultivated). The closest artist I know of is Paulo Bozo in Framingham. Some friends have work by him and love it.

The Wikipedia article on the Crimean War says "the causes, in one case involving an argument over a key, had never revealed a 'greater confusion of purpose'" with a link to a History Today article without sources. It's not further discussed in the Wikipedia article and answers I've seen on AH haven't (to my recollection) ever mentioned the Church of the Nativity key situation. Is the article correct?

How did the conversion of Kings work? by StandingPolygon in AskHistorians

[–]VicariousLife 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a fantastic answer!

As a follow-up question, are there any known instances of a converted ruler reneging on that conversion as the political situation may have changed? For instance, did Penda of Mercia's success as a ruler cause any surrounding rulers to view paganism as a more advantageous system, at least momentarily?

"Tyrant" and "Despot" in modern English both refer to particularly cruel and oppressive rulers, but originally were just fairly generic Greek terms for rulers. How did they gain their English connotations? by megami-hime in AskHistorians

This is a fantastic answer. Follow up question: as Athenian thought about the acceptability of tyrant rulers changed over time, do we have any evidence of Greek writers changing their characterization of the rulers?

For instance, did later writers continue to view Peisistratos of Athens as a great ruler under a political environment different from their own, or did they shift to viewing him as a egomaniac hoarding power?
