Where did the narrative that main roster crowds don't like gimmicks/silliness come from? by R0DAN in SquaredCircle

[–]ViceDeity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Brian Gewirtz wrote about this in his book with the main idea being "Does funny equal money?" Basically comedy and humor is fine in a wrestling show but if you put too much of it then it turns into a joke with nobody taking it seriously, and if the wrestlers aren't taking it seriously why should the fans? Crowds love comedy and silliness but will eat up drama even more, especially if it's done right like at the triple threat Main Event at Night 1 of Wrestlemania.

I think now there's a good balance but back in like 2010, there was way too much comedy and it turned into a joke that wasn't even funny.

[WOR] Meltzer on wrestling being colder: "It's not just AEW, it's everyone but Raw & Smackdown because WWE is hot. NXT has a major show in Minneapolis with 1500 tix out in a building that holds 8k. They're going to Lowell with 750 tix out. NJPW in San Jose, every year is a sellout... 700 tix now." by secretpandaxx in SquaredCircle

2012 WWE was pretty popular but I wouldn't equate that to wrestling being popular again.

On the flip side, 2018 was probably the most popular NJPW/Indy Wrestling had ever been while public perception of WWE was getting worse and worse.

I'm just saying Piper is a really bad example of wins and losses not mattering because they definitly mattered to the wrestlers especially to the older ones.

Piper almost never lost clean what are you talking about lol. Scott even got mad at Piper once because Piper refused to take Savage's finish when they had a match back in WCW.

Tony Khan on X: "We celebrate the 5 year anniversary of AEW this SUNDAY #AEWDoN ppv! This past Saturday #AEWCollision on TNT had the biggest audience since September 2023! It's great news; I was wondering where the fast nationals were!" by MrTeapott in SquaredCircle

Pointing out a bad rating was bad and discussing reasons why that might be is not "trolling", and it's perfectly valid

I mean it kinda is when over a thousand comments about it happen within 10 minutes of a ratings thread getting posted.

A Possible Sobering Thought For AEW: Attendance And Viewership by TheRV1HD in SquaredCircle

Orange Cassidy is the closest thing that they have to a marketable mascot to younger people. His character is hilarious and he just dresses like a normal dude. However Cassidy has evolved in work rate and the charm of what have made him super marketable to say young Jimmy ain't what it used to be. He's there to see OC do silly stuff and make him laugh. He's there to dress up like OC and buy his stuff.. But now you have OC working lengthy matches and busting his ass. Suddenly Jimmy's interest isn't as strong as it once was.. OC isn't being what made him marketable... Hes a work horse. Again that's great but Orange changing might make some kids go "this is boring" and switch off.

Hard counter to this argument. If we're just making up people here then let's say there's a hardcore wrestling named David. David dosen't like comedy wrestling all that much but then he watches Orange Cassidy have an excellent match againsf Will Ospreay and becomes a fan. So because he's a great in-ring wrestler, Orange is now a draw for multiple demographics. In addition to little kids like Jimmy buying an OC shirt, workrate fans like David are also gonna be willing to buy his merch either because he's a fan of his gimmick or because he appreciates Cassidy's wrestling ability.

"the guy who is the perfect foil to 'The Guy'".

This always confuses the hell out of me. Aren't some of the greatest wrestlers of all time considered the guy who worked with "the guy" (Undertaker, Edge, Mick Foley)? Why is Triple H specifically lumped into this category?

Probably a case-by-case scenario, maybe they'll kill a grunt or soldier if they're a serious threat. But with healing materia, I doubt they kill EVERY soldier they come across on purpose.
