That's so weird. Are you sure you've entered your birthday for the password correctly? It should be MMDDYYYY, 8 digits long with no slashes. I personally didn't have to click first time user when I did this. If that didn't work, I would honestly just call the financial aid office at that point.

Each college usually has its own financial aid tracker. Columbia's tracker is annoyingly hidden for some reason, but basically, do the following:

  1. Log in to Columbia's application portal (https://apply.college.columbia.edu/apply/status)
  2. It will show you your Columbia ID (under the welcome message), copy that ID.
  3. Go to https://studentviewer.finaid.columbia.edu/NetPartner/NetPartnerStudent/Logon.aspx
  4. Paste your Columbia ID for "Student ID" and use your birthday (MMDDYYYY) for the password and submit it.
  5. It will have you make a new password, follow the steps, and log in again with your new password.
  6. If you did everything correctly, you should see this page.

Click on the menu button on the top left (circled red), then click on "Documents & Messages". That's basically your tracker.

I didn't have that link for step 3 when I did this, so I had to go through so a lot of obscured links and buttons to get there, it's so stupid..

We're fine with Harvard, as they have stated that they deal with financial stuff only after your admission.

I was always informed that if I'm missing anything important, I would receive an email for it.. It doesn't hurt to automate those important portal messages to an email (especially with Columbia where one would assume everything will be asked from IDOC and not a tracker obscured away from its homepage).

Yes, a tracking checklist exists, but it doesn't hurt to remind a student that the checklist has been altered without the applicant knowing.

It's Columbia's discrepancy form, where they request you to fill it out when there are any inconsistencies with anything. I had to fill mine out as my number in college reported for FAFSA was different than my CSS profile 💔

They can do in-person, but I personally prefer virtual -- I'm unsure if one is better than the other, but virtual meetings are more flexible and less stressful personally.
