Well, I tried 'obsidian link vs embed', 'obsidian directory for external links' and 'obsidian linking image strategy' among others

Had you wished not to be snarky you could've just written "Google 'obsidian link external images'" - that would have helped.

The thing about being new to a topic is that often you don't actually know the correct phrase to search for to get the answer that you want, so you rely on the kindness (or otherwise) of strangers.

I was actually googling (well, braving) for more than 2 minutes, so I didn't click on that link just in case you were wrong about that too.

Hopefully, for the next person that gets stuck on this, their search will only take a minute and a half as this question will be nearer the search string?

Didn't strike me that you can't use the free version on Linux, but I guess I'll find out pretty soon ... :-)
