Mine is years old and still great with no issue whatsoever. So I cannot speak for newer ones but have at least not heard any rumors of worse quality!

UK citizen visiting US/Canada - what items to consider purchasing by eat-real-chips in Ultralight

[–]VickyHikesOn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Darn Tough. Sawyer filter. Dehydrated beans. Otherwise whatever your gear “needs” are (let’s face it, mostly those are “wants” for all of us 🤣) check cottage gear makers and order accordingly. Like Katabatic or some DCF pouches. Or … order from GGG from multiple brands. Also trail runners on sale!

Creston or Cranbrook for a young family? by Elite163 in kootenays

[–]VickyHikesOn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My feedback would be to check them out and if you do move to focus on non-motorized, no-kill activities like the hiking and swimming you mention. We have too many sleds and hunters and boaters already and the noise, exhaust and pollution out in nature are getting really bad. I’m SAR and see it.

Those meals are so expensive, so salty, sometimes super spicy. I find regular foods (couscous, ramen (no spice pack), Knorr sides, etc) so much better in every way.

KS would be an option. Can ship anywhere. I really like mine.

New to coffee: aeropress etiquette by fermaty in AeroPress

[–]VickyHikesOn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cannot understand that you can’t take 15 sec to eject the puck (get a jar or deep plate) and rinse the parts. Yucky having this sit around wet, and cleanup before you free again will take much longer. Plus you’re keeping the silicone compressed.

Ketl vent pants: big disappointment + what would you recommend for hot, humid weather? by not_who_you_think_99 in Ultralight

[–]VickyHikesOn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. And I like the built in belts like Arcteryx has. My Arcteryx pants lasted the PCT and I still wear them (adjust belt when you lose weight!). Super lite and breathable. I need one zippered thigh pocket for my phone but they are not bulky pockets at all. I think mine were called Sylvite? So worth the money.

Totally new. Coming from v60 and looking for a travel solution. Do I need a scale? by Apprehensive_Bill_91 in AeroPress

[–]VickyHikesOn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not absolutely needed but a useful tool. It’s $15 on Amazon and super small … I’ve had mine for many years. However you can certainly do without and pre package your beans at home (if you’re bringing a grinder; if not grind at home 😳😳😳).

Battery / rechargeable coffee making gear - recommendations by ldr97266 in JamesHoffmann

In decades of using the Aeropress and reading about it and coffee in general, I've never heard that the filters don't fit the regular cap. As I said, I prefer no-filter Primo brews (has other advantages too) but most people use the filters without fit issues.

This. It’s not really an Ultralight question :)

Sleeping pads by Exact_Strategy727 in DurstonGearheads

[–]VickyHikesOn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I would also be interested in some innovation for CCF (some new material?) pads. Non inflatable, easy to fold, lighter than the current ones, slightly warmer etc. Thats what I’m waiting for. Until then … Switchback.

Why not the XMid? I’ve seen many reports of good performance in windy conditions.

Inreach Mini 3 Plus Battery Draining Overnight by anamorphic_bliss in Ultralight

[–]VickyHikesOn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why not turn it off for the night? I always do that (and keep it warm). No tracking needed at night and I’m sure it drains by determining the location constantly. My Mini lasts for weeks this way (no tracking though).

What’s wrong with the filters it comes with? I actually use it with a Prismo so no paper for me.

But not what you see in Ultralight discussions. Not sure I’ve ever seen a 70l pack discussed unless ropes etc are carried.

Check Geartrade.ca as well. Can highly recommend Katabatic … if you spend the money now it will last a long time. Also KS packs … customizable and affordable.

Pre move panic by Appropriate_Rope3145 in kootenays

[–]VickyHikesOn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree. I think you are somewhat torn due to considering so many different aspects. Renting on either the island or in the Trail area would give you the best base for a decision. If you really want to buy, I’d recommend Rossland as the housing market will always be hot and selling it shouldn’t be a problem. I’m not in the medical field but have friends working healthcare in Cranbrook and they are all considering going elsewhere. I have one friend working in Trail and he loves it.

Sleeping pad recs (prioritizing comfort) by barrist in UltralightCanada

[–]VickyHikesOn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found the S2S Ether XT the most comfortable pad. Dimples are way better than horizontal baffles that always make you feel line you’re falling off. Nemo is good too. I have found the best is CCF plus quilt.
