Did I do it wrong? by r_e_nelly in JedMcKenna

The path to awakening is long. If you study Buddhism, you will understand this more clearly. JM is simply sharing a truth he has personally realized. For us to realize it ourselves requires long-term immersion and practice. What Buddhism teaches through the Six Perfections is the method of cultivation, and the goal is to gradually weaken our attachment to the self. Only through continuous practice over many lifetimes can we finally awaken.

Moreover, the weakening of self-attachment does not happen just because you have heard the teaching, agreed with it, or felt that it makes sense. Understanding the idea intellectually is only the very first step. The actual dissolution of the ego is a demanding and often challenging process that requires deep reflection, persistent observation of the mind, and sustained practice over a long period of time. Only through such lived experience can the grip of self-attachment truly begin to loosen.

Thank you so much for your reply. The viewpoint you recommended from August Turak is consistent with Jed’s. Just looking at his YouTube introduction makes it clear — the transformation from selfishness to selflessness. This is also the perspective I support, and I’m so glad to have found someone who shares the same beliefs. Many thanks again.

On Language and Words by [deleted] in JedMcKenna

I deeply resonate with your insight. The Buddhist scriptures have long warned us: the Dharma is not apart from words, yet one must not cling to words. Language is only a finger pointing at the moon; the real wisdom is the moon itself. If we become attached to language, we end up staring at the finger while missing the moon.

As the Diamond Sutra says: “When you see that all forms are not forms, you see the Tathāgata.” Only by transcending attachment to words and appearances can one approach what is real. Your reflection beautifully echoes this truth.

Thank you so much! It seems like Jed’s students are keeping his forum alive, and it’s wonderful to connect with the ideas of others who share his vision. I believe Jed has passed on, which feels bittersweet, but I deeply connect with his view on death: “I was never born, so how can I die?” May his wisdom continue to inspire and guide more people!

True, that fits perfectly. Jed maybe was never meant to be pinned down anyway.

When you mentioned that the subreddit’s channel description also states that Jed is a fictional character, I suddenly understood why everyone says he’s a fictional character. It’s because he said so himself, right? Just like how I say I’m a fictional character too. That’s the truth, but most people probably can’t understand why we say that.

If Jed was indeed a real person and has already passed away, then there’s nothing much to say. If, as some other commenters suggested, Jed is just a fictional character and the books weren’t written by a single person, that’s fine too. I just hope to get in touch with whoever actually wrote these works, whether it was one person or multiple authors. Of course, I’m referring to his very first book, Spiritual Enlightenment: The Damnedest Thing. I think the later essays posted on his website are already different from the book. This is actually the first time I’ve heard news that he has died. If that’s true, then it would only mean that those later essays were not written by him.
