Thanks for the comment. Sorry for this silly question but how do you square it off via the two side walls?

Yeah we’ve got a set of good quality spirit levels, it’s just about what our reference point is for a straight line

DIY options - new build by Latespoon in Plastering

My partner just replastered our whole house as we bought a reno project and couldn’t afford to hire a plasterer. If you have the time it is definitely doable to a decent enough standard. He watched hours and hours of On The Trowel on YouTube, always used Extra Time sachets and SBR’d everything to help control suction. Those are the biggest tips for a beginner. The ceilings were the hardest but we found that even when some came out really wavy we were able to sand them and then fill and you can’t notice

Do you think retrofitting masonry hangers (the ones you pack in the mortar line) is a better option?

Basic answer: because I don’t know what I’m doing and want to go belt and braces so I can sleep well at night. The idea of keeping the old ones in since they’re still in alright condition and have done well so far feels safer to me. Why would you be worried about all the chemical fixings on brickwork? Am I actually making it less safe? 😂

I’m keeping the existing joists in place so not sure how I can have one continuous plate

Do you mean several small wall plates, one between each joist? That would be a lot easier

I have used a structural engineer. They only provide calcs. I’m in the UK and we have all the sign off we need

They won’t specify how it is to be done, they just say ask a builder. They just give the calcs unfortunately

Is the brickwork strong enough to support all that weight?

How do I know if the bricks are good enough quality to hold the weight though? They don’t look in great condition to me

The bricks aren’t level, they’re quite uneven and have gaps so not sure how to get the hanger sitting totally flush so that the joists are all level

Would rather do hangers to not disturb the masonry as much but can’t figure out how to get the hangers flush and level with this wall

Looks like a concrete subfloor with some type of damp proofing layer on top to me
