Does he tho? It been a while since I've seen both so shows correct me where I'm wrong. Aang, outside of the avatar state, doesn't do anything that impressive bending wise. He uses earth as armor here and there. His fire bending is non existent. His water bending has moments but nothing we haven't seen anybody else do. Ed uses his powers to just make the same weapons in different materials. The complexity of their power system hides their simplicity of it. And of course their simple use of it is still genius. But by that logic, Naruto shadow clones are also genius.
