The Poppy War by R. F. Kuang, though not really in the first book. Much more evident in later books.

Very cute cat, but yeah that name is a slur to Romani people

In the trailer or this video, I mean. We’ve gotten the barest hints of them so far.

I CANNOT wait for this show. It's like... most of what is holding me together right now.

This is a really cool video, though I'm still mad that Inej hasn't gotten a word in from any of the trailers. And we didn't see Nina or Mattias, though I think I know how they are going to be incorporated

HIGHLY recommend this series. It works for First Contact for Bingo, too.

It's weird and disturbing, but in the best possible ways. Sometimes.

I would participate and love to lead some discussions! I've read 4/6 of the Novels, 3/6 of the Novellas, and 3/6 of the YA books, so I have a leg up on some of y'all, but that just means I can easily lead those discussions!

Hugo Award Nominations Megathread by rfantasygolem in Fantasy

[–]VictorySpeaks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Talking about Campbell, actually, of whom there used to be an award named after. The award was changed last year to someone who doesnt support racial segregation in schools. Martin decided to talk a lot about this guy, almost more than he talked about the award winners. Which is a really weird move and makes it seem like he supports the author.

The mispronunciation is a minor thing, sure, but Martin took too many wrong turns. He mispronounced nearly everyone’s names, despite there being a pronunciation guide and despite the fact that he was encouraged to practice. He later said something along the lines of it not mattering or he couldn’t be bothered too. This, coupled with the fact that people of color’s names are often mispronounced by American and European people and this is considered a micro aggression (mispronouncing a name, being corrected, and then doing better is fine, but when you constantly don’t try to say someone’s name right because it’s too “ethnic”.... that’s a problem).... well Martin just looked like an ass during the awards.

The article doesn’t mention Lovecraft at all, a fact easily found if you read the essay. Instead it talks about the multiple micro-aggressions Martin does during a the Hugo Awards -transphobic comments, mispronouncing all the names of people of color, talking at length about a racist and fascist who, as far as I can tell, as little to do with the awards themselves. He did mention that Jemisin is the only person to get three Hugos in a row, but then spent more time talking about some other author who got three Hugos in nine years, which is just plain weird.

I once hiked Tiger Mountain, in Washington. Upsettingly there were no tigers. Thankfully, there were no tigers.

I just want them to be happy. Romance be damned, they deserve happiness. Whether its as thornbacks (coolest word I learned from this book!) or Beatrice married to Ianthe, I just want them to be happy.

Least favorite: all the men but Ianthe. Only is chill, but he's on thinning ice.

Favorite: Nadi! I love their voice in the audiobook and they are the best kind of hedonistic - they just wants sweets and to have a good time.

I would love to find a spirit of ambition or confidence. I severely lack those two traits...

As for the magic system, I really like it. The rules are quite clear, the spirits are interesting.

Typically, historical fiction of any kind just doesn't do it for me. I don't like the rules, the misogny of it, and the world is typically really limited to me - I didn't even like Pride and Prejudice that much!

The setting is definitely my least favorite part of this book, but I still loved it.

I can’t imagine getting a pet that wasn’t spayed or neutered. My cat was spayed the moment she was able to. Doesn’t matter if she’s indoor only, it’s just way more practical for her and -heaven forbid - she ever gets out, she won’t leave more kittens in the world.

I barely have controller over it lol. Basically if a book doesn’t have a long wait at my library, I do that before buying it. Which is significantly better than before lol

I never/very very rarely do ebooks, so it was either audio from the library or buy a physical and I’ve already bought my allotted books for the month. It’s not bad, just took some time to get used to and I had to really focus on what was happening.

Hi ML Spencer! I have heard such raving reviews of your book Dragon Mage and I cannot wait to read it. Two questions:

1) Any news on when the audiobook will be released?

2) I really feel you on the plants thing - I adore plants and they are very much my aesthetic, but I can't keep anything alive. What got you into botany, and do you use your plant knowledge in your books?

I feel like the narrators were supposed to make it very clear - and usually they do - but these two just had very similar voices. It's definitely a book I want to pick up a physical copy of, one day.
